They are equal. This goes under the category of "Thou shall not kill." believe it or not, killing ca be taken in many ways, other than physical killing. Hurting yourself or hurting someone else ios killing their self esteem and your pride. So these are equal in the level of sin. Very interesting question though.

    God bless.

Negative karma is accumulated from both actions, but harming others accumulates heavier negativity because others are many and we are one. There are also many other factors that determine the severity of karma. For example, it is heavier to torture and then kill someone, than it is to kill them quickly because the duration of suffering is prolonged giving the mind more time to accumulate negative potentialities.

However, harming oneself also creates negative tendencies, sets up causes for suffering effects in the future, and prevents oneself from being of benefit to others.

Although karma may not be explained in a sophisticated or extensive way in Christianity as it is in Buddhism, there is belief in karma - hence the term 'as ye sow so shall ye reap'. Alot of questions arise though about what is meant by that statement, what the context is, and many contradictory things arise. If Jesus was able to take away your sins (negative karma), and you are able to act however you want as long as you accept jesus into your heart, then what's the point of saying 'as ye sow so shall ye reap'?

Actions are performed by our own intentions and actions of body, speech, and mind. The karma is created by our own mind, so we are the ones who have to experience the effects. However, in Buddhist teachings there are purification practices, and there is some meaning to Jesus death and confession. But, if we continue to engage in negative actions without purifying the negative karma, we, not someone else, will have to experience the effects.

To hurt someone else, Is a sin. To hurt ones self, Is penance.

P.S. I'm not saying that everyone should go out and start hurting ones self. I'm saying, That If you hurt yourself but not purposely, Then It's penance.

Sin being a crime against morality, I'd have to go with hurting others.

it is bad to hurt others and mad to hurt oneself. Now whether it is bad to be mad or mad to be bad or a sin to be mad or bad - I am a little confused.

Well if we are to love our neighbor as ourselves, I think we have to lst START by loving ourselves before we can adequately extend that LOVE to our neighbor. So even though that didn't even begin to answer your question - (HA) I think both are equally sinful.
