Just pondering?
If the ten commandments say: "Thou shalt not kill" and Jesus says: "Love your neighbor," how can Christians justify going to war in Iraq and killing thousands of innocent civilians? If the Bible says: "Vengeance is mine, saith the Lord" and the ten commandments say: "Thou shalt not kill", how can Christians justify capital punishment, especially if you believe that each person is made in the image of God?
When we began the war in Iraq there wasn't an insurgency. Initially the United States provided shock and awe and let bombs reign down on innocent civilians. George W. Bush has said he follows the philosophy of Jesus Christ. Yet I seem to remember that Jesus said to love your enemies and bless those who curse you. Even though there is war and murder in the Old Testament, we can't get away from the fact of what the Commandment says and what Jesus himself says.
I can see that none of you have any idea of what Jesus meant when he said love your enemies and Blessed are the peacemakers. Seems you believe that killing is justified. Even though Jesus calls us to turn the other cheek. This is why we end up following a philosophy of war and not a philosophy of peace. It seems to me that we need to understand that all people are made in the image of our living God. Jesus calls us to do two things: Love God and love our neighbor. None of us follow that perfectly. Only one. As Romans says, we have all sinned. But St. Paul calls us to be ambassadors of reconciliation. We are called to love, not to revenge or hate. Perhaps if we aimed for the higher goal, there would be more peace in the world.
Also you cannot go to war and create shock and awe without killing innocent civilians. Though our military tries to limit what it collateral damage, it continues to happen and has happened in both Afghanistan and Iraq and if you believe otherwise you haven't read the news.

Well in my experiences, most Christians are "buffet Christians", picking and choosing what to practice and what to ignore. Others are unfamiliar with their Bibles (not to say I don't still have a lot to learn) and don't realize that, yes Mosaic law says "An eye for an eye", but with Christ the Mosaic law is superseded by that of Jesus, and the creed is now "turn the other cheek" (I'm thinking of your capital punishment statement).
However, as much as I don't believe in going to war and killing thousands of innocent civilians, it does say in the Bible that before Christ's coming there will be wars and rumors of wars, so there must be wars in order for that prophesy to be fulfilled (I don't say this as a justification in any way, shape, or form, but just food for thought)

You do err, not knowing the Scriptures.
The "kill" should be translated "murder".
Israel had to war against other nations around them.
Your comment about insurgency and reigning bombs on civilians is pure hype.

i understand what your saying but the bible also says in the very next chapter after the 10 commandments (exodus 21:12) "anyone who strikes a man and kills him shall surely be put to death"...... and the commandment says "thou shall not commit murder" in a way its different.

It also says to not kill in Deuteronomy, and several other places. Yet also it does say to kill in many places in the bible. Is this a contradiction? I think so, yet many would dissagree, here is a link of evil bible verses. http://www.evilbible.com/
