It is a theory that suggest that the universe began with rapid expansion. Nothing can be said exploded. Everything, matter, space even time came about with this expansion. All the matter in the universe had formed after a few minutes. Some scientists hate the big bang theory because it suggests a single moment of Creation. Creationists hate the big bang theory because.. well.. they hate science... But we can observe how the universe is expanding and we can see the after glow from the first light emitted by the expanding universe 300000 years after it began. The big bang theory also explains why hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. Many observations that cannot easily be explained any other way.

The Big Bang Model is a broadly accepted theory for the origin and evolution of our universe. It postulates that 12 to 14 billion years ago, the portion of the universe we can see today was only a few millimeters across. It has since expanded from this hot dense state into the vast and much cooler cosmos we currently inhabit. We can see remnants of this hot dense matter as the now very cold cosmic microwave background radiation which still pervades the universe and is visible to microwave detectors as a uniform glow across the entire sky.

the big bang theory is simple, and most of what people say isnt the big bang theory. all the big bang theory says is that since everything appears to be moving away from eachother it should have come from a single point.

the big bang theory says nothing about what, how, when, where, or the nature of what banged.

Roughly 13.7 billion years ago, space, time and all matter were created at once from a singularity and continue to this very moment to expand. Time and space did not exist before the 'big bang', and there's nothing 'outside' of the 'big bang' for the Universe to expand into. Rather, it creates the space for itself to expand into as it goes.
