Red Sox have signed Bartolo Colon?

The Red Sox have signed Bartolo Colon, a former Cy Young Award winner trying to rebound from surgery.

Do you think this is a good move, or just an unnecessary precaution? Also, where do you see him fitting into the Red Sox's rotation? Who will they remove, Jon Lester or Clay Buchholz? Do you think he can return to his previous form?

Thanks to eveyone who answered!

Well Colon can return to his form once he loses his huge gut. He is probably half the team right there...

Anyway, I think he can return to his Cy Young form, and I think its a huge steal for the Sox. With the possibility of Schilling not pitching much, I would think that if Colon can get into shape and throw well in the preseason he might start in the bullpen as long relief before he gets pushed into the starting role.

That being said, I would probably drop out Buchholz. I loved the kids No-no, but that seems like it would be a fluke to be honest. Lester was being waited on all year by the Sox last year. Anyway, since the Sox couldn't get Santana, I guess this move was supposed to be a good one, and it probably is, if he can return to form..

So in theory it could be...

    Beckett

    Dice-K

    Colon

    Wakefield

    Lester/Buccholz

Doesn't seem that bad to me...Only if he can return to form though. If not, he is just a 100 MPH fastball pitcher with no movement.

    Good luck!!

I think it is a bold move by the Red Sox, they are not putting out much by signing him to a minor league deal...but him being there will push the other pitchers to perform at a little higher level. I also think it signals that the Red Sox are not as comfortable with Buckholz right now...they want a backup plan should he blow up under the pressure. If it works out that everyone is performing at a high level and Colon is lights out then they got a great deal on a possibly premiere pitcher, if he is servicable and they do not feel like he is better than Clay at this point they have a peice to trade that has won a Cy Young...that is at least worth a few prospects to some clubs. As far as will he return to form, that is tough to say, the injury is not something that he can not recover from but does he have the intestinal fortitude to man up and do the work to get himself back to where he once was, he has never been known for his work ethic but maybe the doubters will drive him to turn it around and get back what he once had.

Either way it is a good deal for the Sox.

They only signed him to a minor league contract and he is garunteed no money unless he comes up to the majors.

I personally think that they have a great end of the rotation with Lester and Buchholz, but if Colon does find his way into the rotation, it will probably be Buchholz that gets held out of the rotation for the time being.

It's a decent move for the Red Sox given that it's a win-win situation, but I don't think they absolutely needed to do it.

He was signed to a minor league contract, so it is unlikely that he will become a consistent starter in the rotation. It is a good move because they need more to back up their starting rotation. I don't believe that he will return to his previous form because he is in such bad shape. I see his Cy Young Award year as a breakout year that he will never have again. However, when anyone in the rotation needs a break, Colon will be an average replacement for a couple of starts.

    Hope This Helps!

It's a low risk high reward sign. With Lester and Buchholz still young and kind of unproven Colon was worth the flier. Worst case scenerio is he stinks and is cut lose. But hopefully he'll realize this might be his last chance and work his rather large back-side off. If he does manage to gain a spot Buchholz will head down to AAA or to the pen. He's younger and Lester is a lefty.

They'll probably move Buchholz just for the fact that he's still young and inexperienced. Experience is the only think Colon has over Bucholz. Personally I think no move is better than a dumb move and this was deffinately a dumb move at least for the Red Sox anyway. He would have fit much better on a team without much pitching depth.

as a sox fan, i personally think this is a great move. colon is only 2 years away from winning the cy young and it is a minor league contract. while lester and buckholz are young, they are still unproven and if they struggle, colon can be a fantastic insurance policy. also, wakefield has been hurt a lot recently and beckett has a history of blisters so colon could step in in case of an injury

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen went to watch him pitch in the Dominican. He told GM Kenny Williams not to sign him. The White Sox do not have a great pitching staff. And if they won't take a shot at him, tells you how bad he is. Maybe it has to do with the 280 lbs he carries, or just the history, but I don't think he will cost anyone their job.

I really don't think this move will amount to much, it's just a matter of Boston taking a gamble on a guy with a minor league deal, with slim hopes that maybe Colon still has something left in him.

they signed him to back up schilling cuz he is injured. colon isnt guaranteed any money, so its a win win situation. if he is good, maybe he can go back to the two time 20 game winner that he was once before and guide the sox to their 3rd world series in 5 yrs!!
