Islam! Man punished for walking his dog?

A 70-year-old Iranian man was arrested and sentenced to four months in jail and 30 lashes for walking his dog, Adnkronos.com reported Tuesday. Police caught the man on the street with his dog in Shahr Rey, a suburb of Tehran.

Owners of domestic animals are forbidden from taking them on the streets of the city because Islam considers dogs to be impure. An Islamic judge later charged the man for "disturbing the public order.

Does ISLAM really consider a dog an impure animal and should an old man be put in jail and then get 30 lashes just for walking his pet?

Update:

Nimmy, apparently Iranian officials would disagree with you.

The Quran doesn't say anything about dogs being impure.

There is an Islamic Hadith (sayings of the Prophet and people close to Him) that discourages anyone from keeping a dog unless the animal is used for hunting or some other kind of work. I'm told there is another Hadith that states "an angel will not go to a house where there is a dog" or something like that.

Hadith is not considered to be as accurate or authoritative as the Quran, though. Muslims might accept one book of Hadith and not another depending on regional and sectarian differences.

I had some friends who are Muslims from Pakistan. The wife told me it was wrong for me to keep my dog. I told her what I just said about the Hadith. Her husband said I was right and they never brought it up again.

I know a lot of Iranians, and there does appear to be a cultural thing about not being comfortable around dogs. But that tends to be the older people who have not had much exposure to American culture, younger Iranians brought up in the USA don't seem to feel the same way.

Dog is not impure...but not reccomended either..

    1) Having a dog as a pet is not an Islamic style of life. I cannot say that it is haram, but you should understand that the Prophet (SAAWS) has recommended us to have a dog for cattle or guarding our property or any similar service, but not to have it for a pet.

It's not haram to touch dogs, and there is nothing wrong with touching dogs or even playing with them. The only thing that islam DOESN"T RECOMMEND is owning a dog in the house, because the angles won't come in a house which has a dog. But notice I said not recommended. Because Haram is a big word and u can only use it when u r 100% sure of what u r saying. Owning a dog for protection is not haram or not recommended, it is totally fine. The only thing u gotta do if u touch a dog is make woddu, because a dog is considered dirty, so if u touch a dog, u just go to go wash ur hands and purify ur self by making woddu

    2) The saliva of a dog is a certain problem if it licks at any bowl because it should have some special treatment: to be washed 7 times and one of those should be with earth (sand, dust; etc.). The majority of schools say that the saliva is impure, but Malik disagrees with them because he thinks life makes everything of an animal, other than the well-known impurities, is pure. Saliva then, according to Malik, doesn't do any harm, but in licking, he says you had better clean it.

well dogs are a considered impure in Islam generally and keeping them as pets is discouraged unless they are doing something beneficial like sheep dogs or guard dogs.

Islam discourages keeping animals for mere company or amusement.

although i dont know whether this is something that is punishable.

The Ulema of Qom are a bit too extreme. not as extreme as the Taliban or Saudis, but still extreme.

Islam does consider dogs impure. Being near dogs is one of the reason that a Muslim loses his ritual cleanliness (wuduu). Actually, in Islam it is not permissible to keep dogs as pets ( http://www.albalagh.net/qa/dogs_islam_prayer.shtml ), however Muslims are allowed to keep a guide dog if they are blind. It is things like this that turn me off Islam.

What do these backward people do regarding the military dogs? seeing eye dogs? search and rescue dogs?

the poor old man was walking his "friend" (dog)...a normal everyday practice...punished by their backward stupidity!!

Good Grief!! with that mentality I would suppose that "Lassie" is considered impure propaganda??

Yeah well if they will execute a young girl for witchcraft and drag a professional woman out of starbucks I'm really not surprised - except this time a man is getting punished

You know, for some reason, I am not surprised.

Now, after that somebody still considers islams non capable of weird things, like blowing themselves in a crowd, or killing prisoners while screaming : "Ala Akbar" ?

I assume the 70 year old man had lived in Iran all his life and was therefore well aware of the crime and the punishment. I have no opinion. It is not a crime here therefore the punishment would be unjust, it is a crime in Iran and the man knew it to be so therefore the punishment is the punishment and it would have been fairly easy to avoid.
