What kind of RAM should I buy?
I really need help. I'm trying to fix up an old Gateway Essential 500 - Windows 98 computer for a friend who doesn't have a computer. The computer hasn't been changed so far and has all the factory parts installed.
I want to install Linux Ubuntu on this computer, and I also want to install more RAM (it only has 64MB right now). I tried contacting a Gateway support representative and they were anything but helpful, so I need you to help me decide what kind of RAM to buy.
The computer's installed memory module specs right now are: 64-MB 100Mhz 64Bit 4-clock CL=2 SDRAM UNBUFFERED DIMM. The motherboard has 3 memory slots and the maximum amount of RAM that can be installed at one time is 384MB.
What is the cheapest way I can get some RAM that will be compatible with this computer and make it faster (and where should I buy it). This is the first time I've done this so any help you can offer is much appreciated.
This is it:

The way i upgraded my RAM was through http://crucial.com,/ it's won many awards and is user-friendly. It will scan your computer and give you compatible types you can buy from the website or look for the same kind at a lower price elsewhere (http://tigerdirect.com/ usually has the best deals, but crucial has it in stock) Buy it and wait. When it gets there, take the case off, WEAR AN ANTI-STATIC STRAP OR TOUCH A GROUNDED METAL SURFACE BEFOREHAND! make sure the RAM isn't cold, flip the 2 locks on the slot away from it and push it in, you have to use some force but be careful with it, i broke one of the clips on my brothers computer. it will lock itself in place, put the case back on and you're done =)

where is not a problem, just buy the cheapest...
Just buy SDRAM, it's on the shelves with that exact name... Only drawback: it's expensive, because it's old. They still make them, but in low quantities, so they ask more money for these than the newer types...
Mostly all computer salesmen can help you out with this...

Visit a site such as PNY.COM that sells memory and see if you can use their web page for memory sizing. It will ask for model number, maker, etc. Eventually it might even come up with a reasonable answer for you. Maybe.
