How do I tell when a pinecone is ripe?

The pinecone(s) are coming from a soft-needle pine tree (don't know what type) in Ontario. How do I tell when the pinecone is ripe for plucking? I don't want it immature, nor do I want to lose the seeds to the wind.

Is the best way to plant it to let it dry inside and then take out the seeds for planting?

Yes indeed. When it is brown pick it and bring it indoors to dry and open. Put the seeds in whenever it is possible. The frost doesn't trouble pine seedlings too much!

I agree and would add putting it in a loose paper bag to help catch the seeds is a good idea.

Let them fall off the tree, do not pluck them.
