To all who believe in the Bible: Your take on the Prosperity Doctrine?

To all Jews and Christians of any stripe. No sect or individual who accepts some translation of the Bible is outcast on this one.

:^)

Please consider this the working definition of the Prosperity Doctrine (scripture is cited):

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prosperity_Doctrine

Now consider this example*:

Donate a monetary contribution to my ministry. God will reward you materially; i.e., you will get a new job, a raise, an increase in business, sell your home, etc.

Scripturally sound? Valid doctrine?

Or self-serving to my ministry?

Thanks! Pile on.

* Just an example. I don't have a ministry!

I am not a believer in the Bible and I find the prosperity doctrine a very strong argument against organized Christianity.

The hypocrisy of Christians who pick and choose which parts of the Bible they are going to live by and then tell me how to live my life just makes me sick. I think I live a more Christ-like life than many of these self-proclaimed Christians.

Let me cite some scripture (words spoken by Christ in the Bible):

    Matthew 19:21 (King James Version)

21Jesus said unto him, If thou wilt be perfect, go and sell that thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come and follow me.

    Mark 10:21 (King James Version)

    King James Version (KJV)

21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me.

    Luke 12:32-34 (New International Version)

32"Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

No, I do not believe in the prosperity doctrine. God never promised to do any of those things no matter what we do! What he has promised to provide all that we need, emphasis on need. So many people today confuse what they need with what they want. Many godly people who devoted their whole lives to serving God lived in poverty, were tortured and killed for their faith; however, each one of them believed, knew, it was worth it. God doesn't offer you material prosperity--He offers you peace, being saved from the wrath to come, eternal life in paradise, and never having to be alone, among many other rewards in the future.

Sorry that is not what Jesus came for.

We are called to drop everything for Christ, not worry about materialistic things.

I know that God has taken care of me financially, I am not a rich person.

I have faith that God will see me through all things.

Yes I work, yes I pay my bills, but my faith is in God for my eternity, not my earthly materialistic possessions.

    Good question :)

I would suggest they all read the book of job. Its all a heart issue right?? To give out of love or to give from greed, i.e., I get a lot more. That is such trash it makes me want to hurl.
