The Bewildering World of Blind Swordsman Zatoichi: Where to Begin?
I am currently undergoing a samurai cinema freakout, but I am missing one essential element. I have never watched a Zatoichi film. I would like to, but there are so MANY! Which ones should I begin with and which ones are your favorites? Thanks in advance!
Thanks for your insights, shop rat! I have watched a few of the Lone Wolf and Cub movies, including the amalgamated Shogun Assassin. They are quite enjoyable, too! I only recently learned that Tomisaburo Wakayama was Shintaro Katsu's brother. No wonder there were all those Zatoichi trailers on the DVD! ;=)

You are to be commended. I've only seen a half dozen or so, and that was years ago, but it seems to me, they were all from the mid 1960's
Kinji Misumi directed several starting in the early 60"s with Zatoichi Monogatari, and as they say, the best place to start is at the beginning.
Akira Inoue's one of my favorite directors, and though I haven't seen Zatoichi's Revenge, I'd recommend it .
The Takeshi Kitano version from 2002 has it's moments, but Kitano can't compare to Shintaro Katsu.
Not to incite further mayhem, but check out the Lone Wolf and Cub movies as well....
