Why do other people insist on telling me, i'm not a Christian, as if they know more about my beliefs than i do
Wow - I hope i act like one! I am human and make stupid mistakes constantly, but that's what repentance is for, right?
I believe In Christ, the Son of God. I believe he was born to Mary, a virgin, in Bethlehem. I believe he lived perfectly, that he suffered and died for our sins. I believe that Christ was resurrected, and paved the way that we too may live eternally.
I believe in God the Eternal Father, and in His Son Jesus Christ, and In the Holy Ghost.
I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Other people's opinions bother me, because they spit them out at me in front of my children, and attempt to shame them. And while i know that they are wrong to do so, it doesn't change the hurt on my children's faces.
Teaching them to turn the other cheek, is all that i can do at that point. But it would be very nice if i could understand why they insist on behaving so. Maybe then i could explain it to my children.

Are you a Christian? This is a person who believes that Jesus Christ is God, that he resurrected from the dead (and is therefore alive today - Romans 10:9) and was born of a virgin (indicating his sinless nature). As a consequence has the indwelling Holy Spirit [Romans 8:9].
Postscript - you don't actually say that you believe Christ IS God.

You sound like a Christian to me! I am a Christian also. What are these people saying in front of your children? Anyone that is trying to shame your children should be ashamed of themselves! That is terrible! I feel that the best thing you can do is just tell your children that some people are very confused and don't really know God. Tell your children that you need to pray for these people's eyes to be opened!

Because Christians aren't perfect, and they judge too. Do not ever let someone tell you who you are and that what you believe is wrong. If you pray to Jesus and acknowledge him as your savior, if you believe in God and walk with Him in your life, then you will be fine. As long as your life is dedicated to loving God, you are doing what is right. Just because you don't do it the way some Christians would like to think is the right way doesn't mean that God finds it unacceptable. Go as you are led by God.

perhaps because they are not, and feel that you shouldnt be. perhaps they respect you and don't want to feel like your different.
I am an Atheist, but everyone tries to tell me I'm Agnostic. I know I'm not agnostic, but i think some of my friends want to believe that i have some faith so they dont feel like they are being judged, it may be the same thing with you. Regardless of your actions people will want you to be like you.
This is of course assuming that we arent talking about your priest/minister....if he/she is telling you that you arent christian, then maybe you've got a problem ;)

Too often we see christians displaying a staggering lack of knowledge about their own religion.
I've personally seen christians claim that:
* christianity is not a religion
* catholics are not christian
* mormons are not christian
* jehovah's witness are not christian
* many biblical stories actually aren't in the bible
as well as provide confused, incorrect and contradicting information about their beliefs.

We are known by our fruits.
Mat 3:8 Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance:
Mat 7:13 Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat:
Mat 7:14 Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
Mat 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
Mat 7:16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Mat 7:17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.
Mat 7:18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.
Mat 7:19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.
Mat 7:20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.
Mat 7:21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
Mat 7:22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
Mat 7:23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.
Mat 7:24 Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock:
Mat 7:25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
Mat 7:26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:
Mat 7:27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.
Mat 7:28 And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine:
Mat 7:29 For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

Many fail to realize that there are many different beliefs even within the same religion that they tend to judge.
Do not worry yourself with those who do this to you as it is they who are being narrow minded.

Elaborate. Why do they say that you're not a christian? Do you not act like one?

If you truly believe . then why worry about what others think?
"you will not be accepted in your own land "
