Does the birth control work with low dose antibiotics?
My doctor suggested I might need to go on a long term course of low dose antibiotics for rcurrent cystitis, and that he'd probably prescribe that if I get another attack. Since he told me that, I've started on the birth control pill. Now I've got another attack of cystitis, and I'm concered that my pill will be ineffective. I guess I'm hoping that low dose antibiotics are safe to take with the pill...does anyone know? the reason I chose the pill in the first place is because condoms are quite a problem for me and my partner.

Read the info leaflet that came with the antibiotics. Some are compatible, some aren't. And phone your doctor. You will probably find that he will tell you that your body will become used to the antibiotics and the pill/antibiotic will balance out after a couple of months.

Most pills work with antibiotics although you don't say which pill or which antibiotic you are on. If you have a google you can see. In general though it's only the antibiotic Rifampin that affects the pill, most others don't. It even says this on the Planned Parenthood web site and others. But despite this it is still recommended people use condoms while on antibiotics, it's a "better safe than sorry" thing. Talk about it with your doctor. You will probably be fine but it depends if you want to take the risk or not.

the pill will be less (and sometimes not at all) effective while taking the antibiotic!!
it's best to avoid sexual contact while on the antibiotic to avoid pregnancy. And being that you have cystitits (bladder infection) you should be avoiding sex anyways to prevent the infection from getting worse or coming back.
the pill will work great once the antibiotics are no longer in your system. it's really important to finish all the pills and to avoid sex until you're better-i get frequent bladder infections and i know that if you don't take the meds like you're supposed to, the infection can spread to your kidneys (which landed me in the hospital twice).
hope you feel better soon!!

Your doctor should know you are on the pill...they have to prescribe it! I am currently taking antibiotics for a UTI and my doc told me that they will not effect my BC. You should ask your doctor. I know that some antibiotics do make BC ineffective...but I think it depends on the type of BC and the type of Antibiotics. ASK your doctor!!!

Antibiotics can impact longer than one week, yet pondering the timeframe (verify with your well being care provider to be sure) you will possibly desire to be in rather good situation, assuming which you're taking the pill daily on the coolest comparable time and not in any respect waiver. finally, verify with your well being care provider or the pharmacist. they are in a position to tell you with reference to the medicine interactions and supply you a extra useful concept. no rely if it rather is a controversy, evaluate utilising a backup, alongside with a spermicidal gel besides, merely in case.
