I bought an Echo in 2002. The Yaris is a very similar vehicle. They are really good cars. We will drive that Echo as long as we can. We love it! Great gas milage and excellent dependability and they LAST!
If you are going to be driving in snow and Ice, put a good set of snow/ice tires on the front. All four is better. Firestone has a very inexpensive snow/ice tire that performs as well as most much more expensive snow/ice tires, and even some studded tires. I think you can have the tires studded, too.
The small front wheel drive cars are very light and ice can be difficult with those all season radials that come on all of the new cars.
I prefer Toyota to Honda only because they are about the same quality, and the Honda costs more. I drive my cars until they die, so trade in value doesn't mean spit to me.
Change your oil every 2-3,000 miles. Keep your coolant and transmisson fluid changed as instructed, and you will not regret it. Engine coolant builds up an electrical current that corrodes.

They are cheaper because they are manufactured cheaper. This does not mean they are inferior. You just have to decide if its whats right for you and your situation. I have never looked into them but I imagine that they wouldn't have much cargo space and they are probably not packed with extras. But if you are looking for something that will be cheap to maintain, good on gas and run forever it is definately a good choice. The cars that used to be economy and compact cars are no longer in those classes. The new Civic is larger than the old Accord and are filled with extras luxuries and the same goes for Toyota. Since the market is demanding the cars to be bigger they are having to make new models to fill in the void at the bottom of the list. Hince your Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris. All in all a Toyota is a good bet.

From base model being around 15,000 they go to 20,000 for "S" in 4 door. They only are 400-800 over invoice as when a car is introduced it is priced to sell. Yaris is actually as big as Corolla 2 generations ago.(2003)

hello. Toyota wishes to influence America in this way, the Yaris is car built for Asia. Maybe they can sell enough Asian-designed Yarises and won't need to design and build further Corollas. (my thought) good luck with your choice. : }

In the UK its not a cheap car compared to Ford or Mazda is it the older Mk1 model you are looking at - I think they are fine very quiet well built & economical.
If it is big enough for your needs Id buy one but there are other cars Id prefer than the new model for instance the Honda Civic.

For a small car and its competitors, they don't have to be expensive. They need consumers against high gas prices to buy economy cars. This is a business strategy. Big cars with big engines are expensive cars. Small cars with small engines are affordable cars. The ratio is the same. These are good cars. These are Toyotas!

Only you can decide if you should purchase one. They are great little commuter cars and have a solid reputation. Just be aware that many people complain that they are not great for travelling long distance. Lack of seat padding/comfort is usually the reason given.
