I believe both previous answerers misinterpreted the problem. I think it's the TOTAL time that is 1 hour. In that case he walks for 1.5 miles (which takes a half hour because he is going 3 mph), and then he jogs for 2.5 miles (which also takes a half hour at 5 mph).

(By the way, the reason I think my interpretation is the right one is that I know that almost no book or teacher would give such a simple problem as the one with the other people's interpretation.)

How far does he walk= walked for one hour at 3 miles per hour = total distance walked = 3 miles.

    he walks 3miles.

he walks at the rate of 3miles/hour and since he walks for 1 hour he ends up covering 3miles, so he has 1mile remaining.

He walks 5miles per hour for the rest of the trip and since he has 1mile remaining he ends up joggin 1/5 of an hour which is 12minutes.

so it takes him 1 hour n 12 minutes altogether but for walking 3 miles
