Is there a possibility that you are wrong, with regards to your respective belief systems?

I want a general sense of how certain people are, with regards to their personal beliefs involving deities and religion.

If you could give a short statement as to why you are or are not certain, that would also be interesting.

Or, could you give a reason why someone with a different belief than you could be just as certain?

If there is a possibility that having Compassion, Kindness and Care for others and myself is wrong... then I guess I am really screwed. The Buddha's way is to live a life that harmonious to all around you doing no harm, doing all good and keeping the heart pure.

I see that as truth, because such qualities are universal, it doesn't matter if we are Americans, Asians, Afrikans, Europeans or Mid Easterns... everyone, even insects and animals needs/wants and deserves to be cared for and to receive kindness. Its a natural instinct until nurture and culture comes into being... for the humans at least

Edit add: I think Merry prankster answer is very good too

  • I am a Messianic Jew - which is basically a christian Jew hybrid, to put it in terms you'd probably have an easier time recognizing.

My beliefs are largely related to my own personal experience with God - so if my beliefs turned out to be wrong, someone should institutionalize me because I would be incredibly delusional and possibly schizophrenic. I can't rule out the possibility that I'm insane, but I don't think that I am and most people who know me don't either - But I'm sure lots of Yahoo! Answers people are voting for that possibility :)

For me, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jesus is reality as much as the air I am breathing....or more so.

As to how others could feel as certain as me, I would say that there are many spirits that can be experienced, if one is not discerning.

Agnosticism is probably the best way to go...Cos evolutionary theory (biological) is probably correct as opposed to creation.. but cosmology is an incomplete science that is based on conjecture and metaphysics rather than empircial science... This leaves room for a divine creator... and this cannot be ruled out a priori (unfortunately!)...

Though epistemically speaking there is no reason or justification for believing in god in the first place... even if he did exist. Like the athiest/philosopher Bertrand Russell said when asked "If he met god in the after life what would he say?" His woulds say "not enough information"!

The question of God is a question of philosophy.. So all atheists and theists should familisarise themselves with the subject called "philosophy"

Thanks for reading.. if indeed you did!

  • My personal belief system is always growing, changing, adapting. So, no. Presented with a new reality, I would have to analyze it than decide how it fits in with what I already choose to believe. Someone might be just as certain because they too dont accept blindly or act reactionary. Or the Bible might tell them. They might be certain because of the opposite. They might be just as certain because they have been told 'how things are' and have never questioned or examined the situation first-hand because that would 'invalidate' their faith.

You assume in your question that there is no objective truth. I don't make the same assumption.

Therefore, under my system, because it stems from God and God is perfect, no the belief system can not be wrong.

But as a limited human being, I can be wrong as I try to understand and apply it to life. Actually, I'm wrong a lot. So naturally, I am grateful for things like forgiveness and grace and mercy to make up for all that.

What we believe is ours. It defines who we are.

For example, I believe in God. I could be wrong and there may not be a God, but I believe in God nonetheless.

When it comes to belief, there is no belief system or personal beliefs. Everything you believe is personal. You may believe something without certainty, without reason.

Answer: Yes there is a possibility that what I believe is wrong, not certain, or not rational. But what I truly believe is what remains.

No. My Christian faith is all about a relationship with God every second of the day. It is both a challenge and a blessing to live at peace with both man and God in the Spirit of Jesus Christ, as servant and not as lord over any man..
