The problem with higher protective tariffs is,
The US is either #1 or # 2 in exports each year.
If we put high tariffs on imports, other countries will put high tariffs on our exports.
And that will cause just as much job loss, as the job gains, we added by raising our tariffs.

Search for information on Smoot-Hawley Tariffs. It's one of the leading causes of the Great Depression. It should convince you that high protective tariffs are an "economy killer" in the long run.
