Briseis IS a patronymic derived from the male name Briseus. Unfortunately the name Briseus is of an unkown meaning. In the Iliad Briseis was (a daughter of Briseus, duh) captured by Achilles. After Agamemnon took her away from him, Achilles refused to fight in the war. I've always found the name lovely with the crisp 'bree' sound and the unusual ending 'S'. Very different from the typical female names ending in the same old a (Alana, Joanna, Maria). However I wouldn't recommed Briseis as a name for a contemporary girl child living in an English speaking country. Most people aren't familiar with the etymology of the name and will find it bizarre. In Greece or for a child with Greek roots it would be lovely though. There are several more familiar mythological names, you wouldn't even have to look any further than the Iliad, think Helen and Cassandra for example.

Personally, I don't find it to be a good name because people will contantly be asking, "How do you pronounce that?" To me it sounds like you were watching "Troy" the other night on television and you took the name from that as a way to be unique and different. Unique and different are ok so long as you wouldn't mind being called that in school.
And for those who asked how is it spelled, Bruh-say-us.

I'm a strong believer in giving your child a name this is easy to pronounce and easy to learn to spell when the child enters school
I mean I like different names, but some get a little too bizarre

It depends. The only Briseis I can think of is the one in the Iliad who gets kidnapped by the Greek soldiers.

I dont want to offend you but I cant even figure out the right way to say that name, I am not sure if this is for a first child or not but please remember that child has to grow up and go to school, kids can be VERY cruel, I know from my own really bad name!! But in the end it is your choice, good luck!!!!!!

she was a captive woman in the Illiad, her family were killed and she became the property of Achilles, she was not a happy woman. The name does only mean daughter of Bris, her father was Briseus, the name was only a nick name, her real name was Hippodameia. Im afraid i cant find a meaning for Briseus, everything just says, greek of unknown origin. sorry.
