Black mold from bathroom exhaust in attic of house...?
We recentlly bought a house built in 1880 with the addition part built in the 1920's. The addition area houses both bathrooms and upon engineer's inspection mold was discovered from improper ventilation. Does anyone have this same problem and if so, how did you remove it? Is it harmful? We have had it swabbed and are waiting for the results to come back from the engineer, but wondered if ayone had this same experience and how it was dealt with.

In older dwellings Mold can always be an issue. You are lucky it is in th attic and has ventilation outside. You can treat it easlity with a 10% solution of bleach water in a sprayer. Take a trash bag with you and scrape off all the mold you can see. then soak it with the bleach concentration, go back weekly and redo the treatment until you see no more mold or it stops growing. then paint the area with Kilz and a light coat of paint and you will never see it again. You should also either vent the bathroom over to an outside vent OR add a vent to outside, usually just routing over to an existing roof vent will work fine.
Source(s): Sorry, forgot to add, YES Black mold is nasty and can cause respiratory infections, that is why you take a trash bag and deposit it all in the bag. then I would wear a small single use respirator while working on it. then toss it all out in the trash WAY outside. - EliasLv 51 decade ago
if the mold comes back as "stachybotrys" then run run run like the wind. this stuff caused me to have brain damage. if the mold is just in the vents then installing new vents is a must. stachy likes to grow in dark spaces with a constant water source. please double check your home for any old water leaks. If the mold is growing on the outside of walls like in the bathroom from humidity then its not toxic mold. God Bless
