Obituary etiquette?
I was reading my hometown newspaper online and was checking the obits and saw one that was kind of odd. This woman passed away and her PARROT and her sister were listed as surviving her before her own kids....of course her boyfriend was listed first. It makes me think that he didn't like her kids and prefered her parrot over them. What do you think?
Legalities have nothing to do with obits. Anyone can write them. I just think it's odd to put a pet in someone's obit. When my baby passed away I didn't put our pet rabbit in her's.

Maybe the bird was important to her, and maybe her children didnt come around. I am a home care nurse, and its a known fact that alot of their children are never around. But I am sure they will come around for her estate to be divided up !!! Nothing wrong with her BF being listed because he was her mate....

I think you are probably correct; however, this may have been her opinion as well. The moral of the story is, be careful of who manages your affairs after your death. A BF would have no legal right to put in the obit unless she gave him the power.
ADDITIONAL: All California newspapers to my knowledge now require some sort of proof of death, and the right of a person to put in an obituary. This became necessary because of phony obits. When my partner died, I, not the family, had the right by the Will and Trust to handle the obit. Other places may have other laws, but we live in a sue-crazy society, and newspapers don't like being sued.

Have you got a link for this?
Edit, I presume the only reason for this is the parrot lived and her partner lived with her, whilst the rest of the family did not.
Very odd, I could understand a guidedog but not a parrot.

You have to remember that she didn't write her own obituary. Listing the parrot first was someone else's choice, maybe even one of her own children. Obviously her pet meant a great deal to her.

I'm not sure if there is a wrong way or right way...I do know that sometimes the obituary makes mistakes on dates, surviving families, spellings...they are human..this could have been the case...it could have been a mistake or it simply could have been that's the family wanted...we never know what happens in families for them to do the things they do...could be some rivalry going on within the family...

Maybe her kids were complete jerks? Pets can make the best friends, lol - why choose etiquette over truth?
