Looking for a good plant to grow in an east-facing window well?
I have a window well that doubles as a fire escape for my son's bedroom in the basement. It is about 4 1/2 feet deep, and quite wide. Currently, there is only dirt and debris there. I would like to cover the ground with vegetation, make it a little garden in the shade, if you will.
I'm looking for a low-foliage plant (so that he can still open the window and escape if required) that does not require much light, but will tolerate a bit of direct sunlight for a couple hours (tops) during summer.
Can you recommend a plant that would be suitable for that location? Thank you!
This would be outside - sort of. :)
I'm in zone 5, and in a semi-arid section of Eastern Colorado Plains. Ground is mostly sandy, some clay.

this site gives different plants and the zones they grow in. I don't know if they're all low-foliage plants though, but it might give you some ideas.

If you only want foliage plants, ferns will work. If you like some flowers with nice foliage, try Hosta, Lily-of -the-valley, Coral Bells (Heuchera) & Heucherellas:

Heuchera are drought tolerant & they have foliage that comes in many different colors:

Heucherellas grow most vigorously and have the stongest colors when grown in partial shade (preferably afternoon shade).

An east-facing window well site provides the perfect growing area for Hostas, where plants get morning sun and afternoon shade. Some cultivars will tolerate some afternoon sun, although plants grown in full afternoon sun (especially variegated plants) will show signs of marginal burning on leaves in the summer months. In general, the blue-leafed hostas require shade, while the gold, yellow, and white-leafed hostas can tolerate more sun.

There are a number of shade loving flowring plants, that have low growth height. I live varigated nettle. It is not the stinging one. It has pretty light green to dark green small leaves and pretty little purple flowers. Does very well in shade, bad soil, actually, it grows nearly anywhere.
