How do different countries deal with homeless dogs?

As I was waking to school I saw two groups of homeless dogs (the first one with probably 7 dogs and the second one with 5) and although I know those that are in my neighborhood are not dangerous I have to think why are they left like that. (just for the record, I'm Bulgarian) I've heard of cases where people got attacked by homeless dogs or even being killed and yet there are so many....

So I was wondering... what's a way of dealing with this problem? How is it being treated in other countries?

and another note I should make... those dogs are not animals that got lost or whatever... they are living in those streets their whole life and they are not any special type of breeds... I don't know even how I am supposed to translate the way we call them...

Some collect them and send them to shelters, some poison them, some shoot them, some even eat them.

Some countries don't really have a big homeless dog program becuase mandatory spay/neuter programs are strictly enforced. Unfortunately, other countries who do have the problem sometimes use mass euthanasia to rid the streets of homeless animals. I believe a couple of Asian countris made the news last year with shooting dogs in the streets....

Where I live there is a native reserve where they have large packs of dogs running around with distemper. In this case, they go out there and shoot them.

Otherwise, the Animal Control Officers will go out and catch them, bring them to the shelter, assess them for any temperment problems or aggression and see if they are able to go up for adoption.

If not, they euthanize them. We don't have many packs of dogs running around here in Alberta, Canada though.

And I think the word your trying to translate is maybe a mutt? or stray?

Here in the Philippines, many people take care of dogs as pets but there are also homeless dogs. We call them 'askal' or 'asong kalye' (aso means dog and kalye is a street) No one takes care of them they are just like scavengers looking for food everywhere....

Sadly, they pretty much put them to sleep. In the U.S., you take them to a shelter and still, after so long, they get put to sleep. Very sad
