how do you calculate negative log of a number?

like, -log(3.2). I know it's not simply the negative of log (3.2). I am calculating the IC50 of a compound, and the pIC50 is the -log(IC50). However, the IC50 of a compound is 3.2, but the pIC50 is 5.49. Any thoughts?

what makes you think its not the negative of log(3.2) Try it in your calculator and see.

    Incidentally -log(3.2)=log(1/3.2) as well

Perhaps there is a mistake in the answers or in your assumptions?

    log(309029.54) = 5.49

    (ie 10^5.49=309029.54)

the coefficient infront of log implies the power of

so -log(3.2) means "power to -1"

so it means "log of 3.2 to the -1"

    thus you calc log( 3.2^-1) or log(1/3.2) = -0.505
