Dry skin on puppy. Now what?

My puppy is a german shephard, she stops playing a lot to sit and scratch. We've already washed her with flea shampoo, and she doesn't have any fleas. I think it's just dry puppy skin. What should I do to help her?

Dry skin needs to be treated from the inside out. The two most common causes are bathing a dog too much (no matter what type of shampoo you use) and poor quality diet. If your puppy is on a good quality food, and you're not bathing too often (and every 6 weeks is the absolute max!!), then the very best thing you can give her is a salmon oil capsule daily. They're quite large, what I do is put a tiny slit in it with the point of a sharp knife and pour it on the food. The next best thing would be a bit of olive oil on her food daily. You didn'd say how old she is, depending on her size, I'd give her up to 1 tablespoon of olive oil per day. You'll see a difference in a very short time.

The other thing you'd have to rule out first though is to make sure she doesn't have allergies to the food she's on, but if you're sure it's dry skin, the oil will help her quite quickly.

It could be a reaction to her vaccinations or worming tablets. I think that you should avoid bathing her and using flea shampoos, the chemicals might aggravate her.

I have read a lot about the problems that grain causes and this is in a large % of dog foods.Try giving her a grain free dog food. Google it there are lots on the Internet.
