I never gave cold medicine to my baby. Recently in the news they said not to give it due to the fact children were dying. So call your doctor before giving any meds to your kids.

    Couple considerations...

    1) Why cold medicine? Fever, or other symptoms? Don't medicate for a symptom they don't have- Tylenol or Motrin is good for fevers

    2) Use newly purchased cold medicine- Tylenol and others voluntarily removed the "harmful if overdosed" ingredient from infants and most childrens' medicines.

    3) I agree that weight is the primary factor for dosing and follow the directions on the package.

    4) Most meds recommend under 2 yrs old to call a physician for if/dosage questions.

For the 3 yr old, don't underestimate chicken broth/soup for relieving congestion, sorethroats, etc. You'll have to determine if it's okay for your 16 month old, depending on his eating.

Good luck, hope they both feel better.

I would call your doctor first but at the cay care i work at we gave some sort of cold medicine (the parents obviously told us to) to a 11 month old and we gave her i think 1/2 tsp. and the 3 year old i would say 1 tsp...but it says on the package for age and weight (i would go by their weight)

My 3 year old is 35 pounds, and we recently gave him 1.8 ml of the medication. HOWEVER, I called my pediatrician's office first for the proper dosage! DO NOT randomly give anything until you learn the right amount. Call the doctor's office!

Check the package - if it doesn't say anything about children that young then don't give it to them - call your doctor first. You certainly don't want to overdose them. check with your pharmacist - they will be happy to help you find something for that age that is safe for them.

i am so scared of the doseage issues and all the reports on children's medicine that I ask my dr. I would call him/her and find out.

Ask your Dr or pharmacist, thats always the best way to be sure.
