The area in and around Branson MO is nice. Especially if your into country music. It should only be about a 12 hr drive. There are many places you could go, its a matter of preference.

Depending on where you're coming from in SE Texas, it could take one day of driving just to get out of the state. With that in mind, and knowing that you're looking for a mountain spot with some good recreational opportunities, I'd like to recommend Eureka Springs, Arkansas to you. I charted a trip from Corpus Christi to Eureka Springs, and it looks to be around 12 to 13 hours of driving time.
It's located in the Ozark Mountains, and there seems to be quite a bit you can do in and around the area. Go to http://www.eurekasprings.org/ to plan your trip. There's an itinerary planner on that site, so you can map out your daily activities.
A popular place to stay is the Crescent Hotel, but there are also a few vacation rentals in the area if you want to save some cash by cooking in a couple of nights.
Wherever you choose to go, I hope you and your son have a good time.
