How to repair your exhaust?

I have about a foot and a half of exhaust pipe that i need to replace ;) what would the cheapest way of doing this? its a strait section and the pipe is 2 1\4 OD. I was think about going to a muffler shop and getting a piece of straight pipe 2 1\2 OD and using muffler clamps but my friend said that wouldn't work because it wont crimp enough and leak. so do they make 2 3\8 OD or could i cut 4 slots in the 2 1\2 OD?

Get a pipe that is 2¼ inch in diameter and get two adapters from your local auto shop that have 2¼ inside diameter on both sides. Cut two slots in each end of the adapter. Install the pipe with the adapter and use four muffler claps to tighten. Install the slots with top/bottom orientation and install the clamps so the thread protrude sidesways (won't scrape the ground). Auto makers have been shipping cars with clamped exhaust systems for YEARS with no problems. You'll get years of service with this.

Get some 2 1/4 ID pipe, this way you can slide it over the pipe far enough to slide it back the other direction over the other side of the pipe. I would weld it but you can use band clamps with the correct exhaust sealer. They make a ceramic based sealant that comes in a tube like RTV silicone.

You have to weld it! Get a glass pack cherry bomb! and the put it in. If you want to sound burly!

But they are right. with the Heat and Vibration your best bet is to Muffler man it!!!

    you'll save time and worry!

If you fix it yourself and it doesn't work then you wasted money and you have to go to a Shop and pay them!

No on the 2 3/8 OD. The 4 slots is bad trust me!

Simple, cut out your section of bad pipe and take it to a muffler shop. Ask them to cut you a piece of 2 1/4" about 3 inches longer and they can swage it to fit over your pipe. Basically you need a poice opened up on both ends that is 2 1/4" ID.

Get the wider pipe. Instead of crimps or clamps, just the section in to your exhaust. Then there won't be any leaks.

dont use clamps, you will regret it, go and get it welded on, thats what they do anyway, clamps have a bad habit of coming loose to, so you will end up losing it, and you should use the right diameter pipe to do the job

It needs to be welded, clamps suck. If you have a junior college or a tech school near you, then check to see if their automotive or welding class can fix it. When I was taking classes we sometimes fixed things for people, all they had to do was pay for the material. We donated the labor.

It may or may not leak, but if it does, do you want to risk being poisoned by carbon monoxide coming into the cabin from undern the car?

gotta be welded my man. It won't be expensive. Go to a really small shop on the corner. They will probably do it cheap!
