Anxiety medication?

My psychiatrist and I are looking for a good medication for SEVERE anxiety. What do you take and how useful has it been? Side effects?

Thanks so much!

Some of the antidepressants like the SSRI's (prozac, zoloft) are used to treat long term anxiety but you may find it comforting to have a side script for xanax, valium, klonopin or something like that to combat sudden anxiety attacks. Your psychiatrist should know which ones do what and which one would be best for you. I would think that a psychiatrist that has to search for one, might not be the best doctor of choice, BUT I do not know the circumstances... it was just a suggestion. I will point out that anxiety is often a sign of a bigger problem and just treating the anxiety alone might not be what is best for you in the long run. I hope that you get better soon.

First off, I'm sorry you're having issues with severe anxiety. I know what that's like. Over the past 8 or so years, I've been on Zoloft, Paxil, or Prozac at different times. Prozac seemed to work the best for me. I had the worst experience with Zoloft. It didn't do much to help my anxiety, and when they tried weening me off it, I had serious withrawls (vomiting, severe dizziness, not able to balance). Everyone reacts to these medications differently though. What didn't work for me may work great for you, and what works great for me may not work well for you. It's a matter of trial and error.

PROZAC works the best. I had the WORST anxiety EVER with panic attacks and ever since I got on prozac I feel like a new person!! The only side affect that I can actually say about prozac is that it made me sleepy. But for me it was good cuz I couldn't sleep at night. And yeah I take it right before bed.

First I would like to say "ask lots and lots of questions"..also talk to your regular physician because some medicines can interact badly with others...

Also I take Paxil and for me it makes my anxiety worse..but I guess thats just me...I am in the process of trying to change meds myself

SSRI's like Zoloft or Paxil daily to keep you from having an attack and decrease generalized anxiety... .25mg of xanax to end an attack once it begins
