I think therefore I am - There is certainty of being on one side, and openness for thought on the other, allowing human knowledge to expand and thought to develop into doubting false notions and forming rational beliefs.
To doubt in this case is to probe the heart of reality with instruments of logic and thus to find nuggets of truth - where each thought ends a belief is formed, and the whole process begins all over again. Whereas, if it is – I am therefore I think. It would be terrible wrong as there then would be no way out of a mess of a person. There would be no method to doubt deep seated belief that might very well be erroneous. And this is the problem with egotistical personalities that they cannot question themselves. On the other hand a person with an open mind would be more humble and yet more certain in whatever he might think he is.
The quote is not something by Descartes to be regarded leisurely as though it were some old monument. It is a living reality of human mind. We hold this to be true as a belief. ‘I think therefore I am’ is merely the beginning of what I going to be that in turn depends upon what I think.
We question all that we know because we want to learn and improve, because we all want to see that there is some purpose to our life, and to our thinking. That we are not wandering aimlessly in the dark ocean of one-person mind, but we listen to others, we share our thoughts and opinions. That there is somewhere to go in our thinking, something to hold on to in the end, and that there are some lighthouses bearing guiding lights along the way.
