For those of you opposed to letting your children serve in the military why?

Military service used to be encouraged, but now people in the upper classes refuse to let recruiters even come to their children's schools. It seems to be a common belief that if you have money your children's lives are worth more than those without it. Shouldn't protecting our country be everyone's job, not just the poor? And there seems to be a misconception that the majority of the military is made up of undereducated people who can't get a decent job in the very high upper classes. I'm not making this up there are a lot of General's in the Army who've made the comment. I just want to hear some reasons for this, not trying to pick on anyone just get people to think and hear some ideas and opinions.

There's even a book about the subject "AWOL" by Frank Schaeffer who's son is a Cpl in the USMC and served in Afgahnistan. He also wrote an article about it that appeared in the Washington post.

Update:

I am an Army wife who's husband just returned from Iraq and I am going through the "Wonderful" VA system with him.

For me it would just be a personal issue of being scared to lose my child. If he/she decided that's what they wanted to do with their life, I would support them 100% and be proud of them, but deep down I would still not want them to do it because I would be afraid they may not come back home. No parent wants to think about that.

I do agree that protecting the country should be for anyone who wants to do it. The rich are no better than anyone else. Prince Henry has been wanting to fight on the front lines for quite a while, but they won't let him because of who he is. It's not right. If that's what he wants, let him do it.

As far as the education in the military, there are a lot of people serving with multiple degrees. Todays military is a far cry compaired to what it used to be. After serving 21+ years in the military, I have seen that the force is not only more intelligent, but better educated with higher levels of education. It's not uncommon to see an E-1 or E-2 with a BA degree. Regarding my kids in the military, I would never try to sway them away from it if they wanted to join. They are adults and it is their decision if they so choose, not the parents. I will say the military was always good to me and I would not trade my experiences for anything.

I'll only agree with you on certain aspects-yes, protecting our country should be a everyone's job. However, the only reason why I oppose the military bringing back the draft and making it mandatory, or just plain serving in the military, is this-the military, right along with other governmental agencies, refuses to take care of its own! Yes, they promise all these benefits, educational, job training, status and the likes-but when it really comes down to getting help, I've seen this happen too often, benefits, medical care and the likes is denied, or it takes a long time to get it. In case if you haven't seen any of the documetaries by Michael Moore, you should-because they're honest, truthful and downright funny, but leaves alot to the imagination. Just use your common sense and think really hard. I'd suggest the public see Bowling for Columbine-gun control, Farenheit 911-the war in Iraq, and Sicko-the health care industry. What all of these documentaries have in common, is that it's downright pitiful that our own government is allowed to treat its citizens like that, and yet they can't even get the proper care! They have to go elsewhere to be treated. Also, numerous articles came out in the Los Angeles Times, regarding the medical care for veterans in the VA hospitals thru out the country and they're just as crooked as hell. They had some employees worked in these facilities, who had contagious diseases, going around infecting the veterans! Not to also forget the sad state of disrepairs of how these hospitals that serve the veterans are in. Remember the Walter Reed Army hospital? Supposedly, there was some substandard care. Hell, there's even substandard base housing for the military. We can spend all of this money bailing out foreign countries, but yet, the government neglects its veterans and families. What a shame!!!

Source(s): Me. My husband's a former Marine, who has to fight tooth and nail, just to deal with the military and he's still waiting for his benefits. I guess, he'll be waiting for quite awhile, I say.

I hope my children do but my wife doesn't.

It is her opinion that they already served (the 12 years I did)
