How do we stop or reduce semi-illiterates on Yahoo Q/As?

Yes Michael I absolutely agree with you. So many times I have posted a serious question and end up with some really pathetic answers. We just have to live with it I suppose.

It's those who click that "report" button for no reason that is causing the majority of the problems here. People are afraid to express their opinions if they are not clones of everyone else's. THAT makes for uninteresting questions and answers.

People should remember that the opinions of all are worthwhile knowing about, even if they feel entirely differently about the subject matter.

Note that this does not apply to people who are truly out to harm someone, threaten someone, or promote hatred. It does apply to people who "report" just because they have nothing better to do.

Give us a right to our opinions, and the questions and answers will be more interesting.

As far as "semi-illiterates" go...realize that kids, people just learning English, and people who were unable to get much of an education do use this site. I think it's good that they are trying to learn something.

We have to accept the fact that Yahoo is there for all to use. I'm not quite sure how embarrassment comes into the equation. I'm not so much embarrassed by the questions, annoyed by some yes but I feel more pity for those who are unable to phrase their questions properly. We cannot blame them as we do not know their circumstances. I think a degree of tolerance is called for.

Whether you find questions interesting and or of value depends to some extent on the sections of appeal to you.

If you or Yahoo don't like the way someone has reported a question why don't you simply ignore the report? I cannot see a problem.

If a question is reported but does not deserve to be reported just ignore the report..

And some people click on "report" because the questions are clearly obscene and puerile attempts to get round the very sensible rules of Yahoo Answers.

Semi-illiterates need answers too.

If you get a violation notice. there's an easy way to appeal. If it complies with the rules, your question or answer will be reinstated. If someone makes too many false reports, they get ignored.

When you report questions what happens is they note it. If you report enough bad questions - they'll ignore you. Boy who cried wolf syndrome.

As far as those who have yet to discover a 2nd grade spelling or grammar book - feel free to point it out to them. If you can do it in line with their question - even better. For example:

Q: 'i dunno if i should go to the beach 2day'. A: You know - you may want to consider going to the library. It really helps to build vocabulary and spelling!

Another one:

Q: 'my dog is ded. what kilt it'. A: 'Your dog is red? Hmm. . . I think a green and blue kilt would work best!'

Instead of spending 5 points to complain you can earn 2 points poking fun at them without them realizing it!
