Classical Music - no loud parts?

Hi, I am going into hospital and want to buy a cd of classical music to listen to. I dont know too much about classical music... I would like some soothing music with no sudden crash, bangs, cymbols, trumpets etc.

Can anyone please recommend a cd of classical music that is all "soft" and no extra loud pieces all the way through... hope I have explained this properly ! Thanks

Update:

*** I cant thank you enough for your quick responses - will be hard to choose a best answer.... this will give me time to purchase a cd before I have surgery - and thanks for your good wishes ***

It is a long time since I worked as a cataloguer of classical music......but I know there are quite a lot of "relaxing classics" CDs around, if you were to go into your nearest HMV or Virgin shop. Classic FM has times when they play soothing, quiet music (there used to be a nice programme on about 2pm, which I listened to while at the dentist!!).

Some nice pieces to look out for - Albinoni's Adagio, Mahler's Adagietto from 5th Symphony, Vaughan Williams "The Lark Ascending" or "Fantasia on a theme of Thomas Tallis".....

I hope your time in hospital goes well, and you are soon better!

I if your looking for quite relaxing piano music shoot for Bach piano smooths or something I'm sure their are albums like that. For example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCuALWK6ZNg unfortunately Gould is one of the best pianist in the world, but you can hear him sing which can disturb you sometimes but all the time.

Beethoven Mozart and Brahms will have crashes and booms lol.

An other relaxing and soothing music could be some arvo part, its a chorister chamber music sounding and type of sacred and minimalistic check it out on youtube.

also Adagio for strings by Barber

if you can also get it for voice

I would suggest music by two French Impressionist composers: Gabriel Faure and Claude Debussy.

Some of Faure's Nocturnes and Debussy's "Prelude to the Afternoon of a Fawn" and "Clair de Lune" would be good starting places for your compilation.

    Get well soon,

Stick with "solo piano" and "chamber music" (string quartets, duos, piano trios, wind quintets etc...) of composers you can think of off the top of you're head

Mozart, Chopin, Brahms, Beethoven, Haydn none of this will be crash bang boom

Bach wrote a series of works for solo cello which I find very soothing : You can buy them all on one CD (NAXOS)
