Can you help me with Windows XP?

My sound icon is missing from my tray.

when I go to the control panel to I noticed that

the entire sound and devices folder missing

How do I retrieve it?

    try going to your control panel, task bar start menu, and restoring defaults under customize

    Go to your control panel click on audio devices then click on "place volume indicator on task bar"

    I would install the sound driver again.
