Hitler & Mussolini?

I'm doing a history essay and the rubric is asking for the good things that Hitler and Mussolini did. I don't need info on the brutality. Remeber this is about the good things that Hitler and Mussolini did not about deaths.

The common cliche' about Mussolini is that he made the trains run on time. He introduced public works projects to reclaim marsh land and improve public buildings and neighborhoods in Rome. He improved his economic ties with his African Italian colonies. He also attempted to crack down on the Italian Mafia, especially in Sicily, in the 1920's.

As for Hitler, it is hard to paint a good picture of him given his overwhelming ambitions to achieve power at all costs and his evil nature overall. However, I suppose one might try to objectively say that he united the German people (including the Austrians and Sudetans) into a unified body during a time of economic hardship.

Some say that through various works he brought full employment back to the German people. He built the autobahns. Even the venerable VW (now Beetle/Bug) is attributed to Hitler's plans to invigorate the economy.

His four year plan of 1934 was heavily weighted toward rearmament, but I suppose one might argue that the plan created work for his population. Of course, this does not negate the consequences of what came next.

Germany increased its prestige in the world after its humiliation at Versailles. This was before its annexation of Austria via the Anschluss or the forced incorporation of the Sudetanland.

He rebuilt the army and his industrial sector. Of course, even this accomplishment is tainted by what followed.

Hitler revitalized a crippled German economy. He got inflation and unemployment under control. He made the German people proud to be German again. He started the construction of the Autobahn and was the one that proposed the idea of the VolksWagen.

Now, in all fairness he did not do this alone, he had smart people in the right jobs early on. Also, his motivation was to create a better tool for conquest. But if he had died in a car crash or something in 1937 or '38 he would likely be revered as one of Germany's greatest leaders. But he didn't, instead he went on to instigate some of human history's most heinous acts.

Mussolini was not as successful as Hitler, but he did much the same things early on. He was rebuilding the Italian economy and improving infrastructure. But ultimately he was several years behind Germany and was not ready for the wars that Hitler had planned.

adolf was responsible for the autobahn and the volkswagon, placing germany back on the economic map after a defeat in world war 1. in fact, had germany not been punished for losing WW1, adolf wouldn't have been pushed to power. he also established a steady german mark, and while some of the newer buildings were rather austere in design, some of the buildings were certainly impressive. adolf also loved his mother and was very kind towards his dog, daisy. as far as benito, he established italy as a country of roman pride not lost 2000 years prior. the one thing benito could say is that he made the trains in italy run on time and this he did. he also went after the mafia and made the mafioso run for their lives. not until the italian invasion had the mafia been so frightened of extermination. the usa, in an effort to move the germans and benito out of europe, made a deal with the mafia (some say a deal with the devil) and reestablished the mafia as heads of replacement govts. oh well, can't have one without another. hope this helps. mussolini was a former history teacher and newspaper editor so he knew his history and ways for show and tell within his country. my personal take on him? if he had stayed in his own country, his children and children of his children would still be in power today. when he sided with uncle adolf? that was the beginning of the end of benito. oh and before i forget, benito is responsible for the vatican and the land/nation it is today! ok?

Mousolini made the trains in Italy run on time (he threatened to execute the train operators if any trians were late) - he is remembered as the only person who could ever make Italy's trains run on time.

Hitler's policy's lifted Germany out of an economic depression - for example, Hitler's road building efforts to create jobs for the German unemployed became the basis for the American WPA - FDR copied this idea exactly in order to buid US Interstate system. Hitler's autobahns came in mighty handy as airplane runways after we bombed the 5hit out of his airfields too. IT IS A COMPLETELY STUPID QUESTION HOWEVER, that like asking Mrs. Lincoln on the night the President was assassinated at Ford's Theater, "So how did you like the play?"

They died! You know its sad that so many people even today are some how good but decide to live and treat others so badly and miss lead to the point of cover-up for their own frailty and unwillingness to learn what is the truth and given a chance would be just like Hitler and Mussolini. Yep, they brought people together, but only to use them like cattle for self advancement!

Ok Hitler created the greatest economy in the history of the earth. He made the unemployment rate drop to almost zero. He made Germany the strongest nation the world had ever

seen. Mussolini created a stronger government in Italy who had had government troubles for years. He made Italy a prosperous nation even though they never won any battles.

They both brought a form of unity to their countries, the like of which had not been seen before that time especially at the beginning of their regimes...before the atrocities were fully realized.

They made the trains run on time.

No Joke - this was a widely held sentiment at the time.

They both restored nationalism in their countries, in hopes of making it the greatest country in the world.
