Playstation 3: Worth Buying?

Now the format war has been won, is it worth my while getting a PS3?

I could upgrade my PC to play Blue-Ray for a little less, and after seeing the selection of games available makes me think that it will just be used as an extremely large (don't start Playstation lovers, you know its massive) DVD player.

Sure theres a few good titles, nothing amazing but I already have most on my 360.

The format war wasn't really much of an issue for consoles and PC's etc. PC's and Consoles never used HD-DVD for storage.

Of course blu-ray will "just be used as an extremely large DVD" thats what it is, but look at what that gives you, in video it gives you a jump from 480i picture to 1080p and several 5.1 and 7.1 soundtracks, on the same disk.

On games it will do the same, instead of constantly making compromises on graphics quality because there isn't enough space on a single DVD to store everything textures and backgrounds can be made more detailed, number of objects increase and overall graphical quality can be improved (and sound can be greatly enhanced).

We are still waiting for games that fully utilize the blu-ray, so there isn't a lot of differentiation between the PS3 and 360 yet, but there will be soon. There are already games on the PS3 that cannot be done on the 360 (because of storage)

In your case, it really depends.

You already have a 360, so you have most of the multiplatform games going on PS3, and you also have a PC.

Now if your PC is high end (which I'm guessing it is if you're going to spend $300-400 on a bluray drive to put in your computer), you probably have a high end monitor. Don't buy that BS that the other guy was talking about with 1080p only being in 37"+ TVs. 24"+ Monitors are typically 1080p. If you have something like that, it could be worth it to get a Bluray drive for your PC.

Your remark about the massive DVD player is wrong. It's a massive Bluray player. 7kg FTW.

Anyhow, back to the Bluray drive thing.

A Bluray burner will cost you about $400. I'd recommend a burner over a ROM drive for a PC simply because with 25gb discs, you can do a whole lot of data backup. However, the discs are expensive atm. If you don't mind the disc costs and you have a 1080p monitor, buy the Bluray drive for your computer.

If you believe the costs of the discs are too high, consider waiting and buying a PS3 instead. Bluray burners will eventually get faster and cheaper, as will media. I have a 24x $200 Yamaha CD burner to prove that. Now you can get like a 48x for $20, if you can even find one that is. It's probably a DVD/CD RW combo drive. The $400 drive that you'll get for your PC is the same price as the 40gb PS3. If you don't plan on playing PS2 games, consider getting that. You'll then have all the PC exclusives, Xbox exclusives, and PS3 exclusives, and then buy the multiplats on whatever platform is superior for that game. Or you can put in $100 more, get the partial PS2 BC and a rumble controller on June 12th with MGS4.

There are more than a few good titles, and besides that there are already more good titles than you will ever have on a PC.

If you think there's nothing amazing on the ps3 then you must be impossible to amaze. But the ps3's cell has hardly even been put to the test yet. It is a given that games will be getting better for several years. Exclusives like Heavenly Sword or Uncharted look better than xbox games already, so in a few years the difference will be huge.

The ps3's size comes from being designed to compete with gaming PC's, with 7 cpu's, a fast gpu, extra coprocessors and an elaborate cooling apparatus to keep it from melting down. Considering how big a comparable gaming PC would be, it's tiny.

Multiplatform games like Assassin's Creed have more content on ps3 than xbox. This is a problem that will worsen for xbox because ps3 games are on 25gb blu-rays standard, and can be on 50gb dual-density blu-rays. Xbox games, and pc games, are on 9gb dvd's. Metal Gear Solid 4 is to be one of the most content-filled games of all time.

Some other stuff you can't play on your xbox:

Gran Turismo 5, the only driving game with realistic physics including drift

    Warhawk, the best battlefield game

High Velocity Bowling: Bowl by swinging your controller, just like a wii

    Devil May Cry 4

    Killzone 2

    Final Fantasy 13

    Haze

    Infamous

    Little Big Planet

    PS Home

    Motor Storm

Resistance Fall of Man 1 and 2

    Tekken 6

    Heavy Rain

    Soul Calibur

Multiplatform games will be looking better and better on ps3, too. A good devkit was released by Sony last year, meaning that devs no longer have to make the game on PC and xbox, then have the game ported to ps3. So instead of looking exactly the same (like cod4 does), there will be a widening gap in quality, with the ps3 ones better. And as I mentioned before, much more space on the disc.

When you look at games you ought to play demos, not read reviews or previews. There is no way to tell if a game is worth getting just because it's the sequel to something or the next in a series. The only way is to actually play the game.

PS3 looks like its going to be around for a good while, although you may have/get most games on 360 remember the PS3 is still a baby in scale of how long its been about, a Blue Ray upgrade for your PC may be cheaper but sooner or later Blue Ray will be everywhere anyway, the main difference between the 360 and PS3 has got to be the fact that online gaming for the PS3 is 100% free! Now thats a real moneysaver compared to 360's online membership fees.

I'll just say it's kinda pointless to have a Blu-Ray playback on a PC unless you like hooking it up to a 1080p HDTV. If you're gonna watch movies on your computer monitor or any TV smaller than 37" you don't want a Blu-Ray anyway, stick with the DVD which costs you next to nothing. 1080p starts at 37" in some brands and at 40" in most.

Now it may be worth getting it for your PC if you want the writability, but I'd wait a few years to get a solidly good mainstream BD-R/RW drive at less cost where blank disks won't be costing you $25-50 EACH like they are now.

With that said, PS3 is the best value of any Blu-Ray technology there is at the present time and will remain so for a good while as HD media will snail its way into mainstream. It's worth way more than what they're going for in my opinion. Think about it like investing. If you invest in this system, there's much more potential for return. 360 as close as it is in the beginning of this console generation is already falling back on capability because its games are DVD based. Game manufacturers are upset they'll be putting their top games on multiple disks which they and the consumer will find a nuisance. PS3 is future proof for I'd say the next decade, maybe longer.

And lastly, yea its bulky as any kind of player, but if you've got a 42" HDTV towering over it, which you should, then why are you complaining about big.

P.S. Speaking of B.S., tuaamin's remark that there is 1080p in computer monitors. I know that is true, in fact it quite easily exceeds 1080p resolution in max settings. But my point was, what is the point of having that much clarity on a small screen. Your eyes don't pick up the detail between DVD and BD on smaller screens. If that were the case, you'd see small TVs at 1080p resolution which just doesn't make sense. Why upgrade something you can't see a difference in? I'm not saying don't upgrade, but do it under the right circumstances.

  • Errrrm personally i think if you have an xbox 360 theres not a whole lot of reason getting a PS3, the games are more or less the same and in some cases 360 games are better. I recon over the next year ps3 will be adding more features but personnally if you have a 360 i believe its nothing special.

On the other hand if your someone who watches movies on a regular basis, the blu-ray is preety cool, but i recon its the sort of thing your use a couple of times.

the ps3 in my personal opinion is a all round better console than the 360. the xbox 360 has been out longer than the ps3 so will have better games but the ps3 is signing exclusive games that only the ps3 will have i have heard that MGS4 will be among them titles. and you might aswell get a console a blu-ray player and online surfing all in one than just upgrade your pc to blu-ray

    hope this helps..

Eh, depends on if you like playing the waiting game. The newer SKU( white, w/rumble) should be coming out summertime or wait another couple of years and eventually the ps3 slim will be out. If you're not a fan of the sony franchise titles(gran turismo, final fantasy, etc) and just want the blu-ray you're probably better off just getting the pc drive.

If youre going to upgrade the PC for it id just get the PS3 instead. Easier to move to a diff room for TV output and such and you never know when a new game title you like will come out.

Then you have both your PC and the PS3 as entertainment outlets

Hell yes, it has bluray free internet play(they are coming out with HOME which will be awesome for online), amazing exclusives coming out such as killzone 2 mgs4 and little big planet. You wont regret it, its reliable and great. the ps3 has also out sold the 360 in the past 2 months, because its starting to get games to back up its power.
