you were a minor child and weren't on the lease so no, he can't legally come after you for the money. He can only go after the person or persons on the lease.
BTW: yes $500 is pricey for painting a room white but as to painting vs. cleaning--many states and localities have laws that make the landlord repaint the rental property every time a new tenant moves in.

The lease owner is the responsible party no matter how many others move in. Any kind of damage is taken out of the deposit. Even with the smallest repair, because your pencil markings were not considered 'normal wear & tear'. But some landlords do go overboard on this rule to pocket the cash. You should've just cleaned this up before so he could not have any room to justify the purchase and application price of paint at the tune of $500.00. Now you know for future reference :-P

I don't think you gave us or me all the information? First, if you wrote on it in pencil and it could have been washed off, why didn't you do it? Second, most apartments ask for a cleaning deposit, usually one months rent, and if the owner has to clean or paint the place he uses it or a part of it. Lastly I believe $300 is high to paint a room, but here again you didn't tell us where you are? In the big cities it cost more to get labor done! In Atlanta, GA. they tell me it doesn't matter who comes to your home, plumber, electrician, painter or handy man, you pay about $100 an hour. So to paint a room takes about 5 hours....

Sounds like he may have paid someone to seal and paint the walls. with the labor involved they may have really charged him 500. i am in apartment maintenance and we were once charged $700 because of the smoke damage from cigs. they had to double coat with sealer and double coat with paint! but you are not responsable. only the lease holder, not the other occupants.
