Bands that musically "Jumped the Shark"?
Jumping the Shark has mostly been related to TV shows that go ahead and attempt a ridiculous act to attract more viewers because of their fledgling ratings and popularity.
But what bands have either,
1 - An established band changes their musical or lyrical style to coincide with current pop music trends to sell records.
2 - A band that gets a new member so that more focus can be made on that new member and so they can get more exposure, kind of like Arch Enemy when they got Angela Gossow
3 - A band that does something uncharacteristically out of the ordinary to start some hype or to get some lost appeal back, i.e Kiss unmasked
or you can also provide some other way a band drastically changed

Everyone's going to say Metallica, so they can't count.
Lifetime non-achievement: The entire Rap Community
When was the last time you heard them actually speak of the 'hood instead of finding yet another butchered English noun to put down women on dance floors? "Crunk" is the onomonopaeia of their pants hitting the floor every eight hours.
And now, a Top 10:
10. Disturbed (from "Down With The Sickness" to Genesis cover)
9. Huey Lewis (does he need Garth Brooks and Gwyneth Palthrow for hits??)
7. (tie) John Mellencamp
7. (tie) Bon Jovi - both made a #1 country record
6. Michael McDonald (pimped by Motown)
5. Michael Bolton (used to rock with Bruce Kulick, ex-Kiss)
4. Santana (but I'm not complaining!)
3. Avril Lavigne (bad to worse)
2. Green Day (actually I'm not complaining here either)
1. Dixie Chicks, hands down. Their career should have died after Nathalie Maines shot her mouth off.

I LOVE Journey myself but I completely understand when someone is not a fan of their music. For example I have heard someone say that the song Separate Ways (worlds apart) is Cheesy. I can see the point even though I love that song. BUT if someone were to say like the song Don't Stop Believing is Cheesy I wouldn't buy that bullsh*t for a second that's an awesome song. I mean even non fans of journey that I know like that one song. I DO NOT like the band Tool AT ALL. BUT they do have a lot of musical abilities and skills. However, I love the band Downset, a hardcore band with rap features that are not so musically talented but they have MASS ENERGY and just songs that groove. BQ:Drink alcohol? NO not anymore BQ2:When I say Billy, you say... your silly

A Metallica with Load Reload and St ****
B KISS with "Dynasty"
C Aerosmith with that Celine Dion Rip-Off.

Heart went from bad *** to blah by following the trends of the 80s hair bands. There really should be a special hell for good bands who " jump the shark".

A lot of people name a band a sellout or say they musically "jumped the shark" as you so eloquently put it just because they have changed a little. My favorite band for example Avenged Sevenfold, or Atreyu.

Queensryche - While they hadn't made a good album since "Promised Land," making Mindcrime 2 just reeked of trying to relive old glories.
Liz Phair - turning into a pop singer
Ozzy - "I don't wanna stop" sounds like a friggin' Britney Spears song.
Sting - Allowing a hack like Puffy to rewrite "Every Breath You Take" as a tribute to Notorious BIG.

What a great question!
I see that no one listed the goo-goo dolls. They were dirty punk rock kids, and then they completely abandoned their roots and went all lilith fair. Sugar Ray did the same to a lesser extent. Van Halen has done it numerous times (I know that sounds blasphemous, but lest we forget Van Hagar) Metallica, sadly. That "Some Kind of Monster" bull with them in therapy was pretty gay.

Everyone's gonna say Metallica, so I won't say anything more...
But I liked AFI in their punk days. Then came Sing the Sorrow. Pretty good album, good for easy listening. Then came Decemberunderground. One or two good songs there. Then came the new single. Holy sh-t that was horrible...

Metallica jumped the shark... They cut their hair and started writting "more musical" songs and totally lost the allure for me... I'm not interested in hearing anything else from them...
