Often, people are not ALLOWED to declare a major in the freshman year. After you have been exposed to some basic classes, you will likely find something that appeals to you. A "major" is just a "specialty" area - something you would like to invest more energy (and money!) in.

Yes, most schools don't make you officially declare a major until your third year. Even then, you can waffle on it if you want to put off your graduation another semester or two. You just can't get a degree without declaring your major.

Yep. You don't have to pick your major right away. And at most universities, you can major in "elective studies," which means you just take a bunch of different classes that interest you.

They'll likely ask you to put down a major, but you can change it. That first year will help you determine what you really want to do.

Yes, you can, but you will have to declare one eventually. Junior and senior years are when you take your core subjects that focus on your major.

generally you have to decide by the end of your second year. at my school you're put into the "exploration" prgram... its really just taking some general classes that generally qualify to most majors until you find what you enjoy.

yes a lot of students do not have a major....take your general ed classes, and then figure out what you want to do from there. maybe take a few classes in different things, and see what you like.....then persue it :)

I don't think you have to decide your major until the end of your sophomore year.

The first year can be nothing but general education that is needed for every degree.
