I'm cooking hard boiled eggs. Am I supposed to put the eggs in before or after the water is boiling?
We are coloring them this afternoon and then I want to use them for deviled eggs on Easter.
Thanks thats what I thought...Hubby was trying to tell me otherwise...LoL...ty again..I'll give everyone a thumbs up when I get back on here 2morrow.

I've done it both ways. However I get very good results when the eggs are put in a large pot first and thenI add cold water with about 3 tablespoons of white vinegar. Bring it to a boil and then cover and place it off the heat source for about 16 minutes. Place the container under COLD water until and place ice cubes in the pan.
That system gives prefectly hard boiled eggs that are very easy to peel when ready.

Well first of all if you have the eggs in the fridge thaw them out at room temperature ok!! Then put them in before to, give them time to gradually cook!! Then when the water starts to boil you can time them from there!! I think it's about 7mins after the Eggs start to boil then it's hard boiled!! try it out with one 1st to have an idea on how to boil them ok!!

I put them in when the water is cold. I think that it keeps them from cracking that way. The best start is to have the eggs at room temp and the water somewhat cooler. I bring them to a boiul then turn off the water and wait about 20 minutes before immersing them in cold running water. I still occasionally get breakage, but I just eat those right away!

put it in when the water is COLD. If not you'll end up with a ton of cracked eggs. The heat change (if you put it in boiling water) creates too much pressure inside the shell. If you wish, also you can put a pin prick, tacks work good, on the flatter side, it will release that little air pocket and give more room for expansion.

Well I like a challenge so I always put them in once the water is boiling. I add salt and vinegar to the water before I put the eggs in, I have no idea why, it's just something my mother always did.

Pierce the blunt end with a pin a put into boiling water. 8 minutes max. If you like the yolk powdery and green on the outside, then leave them for longer.

put the eggs in cold water or you can put them in when the waters been warmed i wouldnt put them in hot water some parts of the egg may come out over cooked with a brown color or brown spots

Start with cold water in the pot, add eggs, then heat water with eggs in it. Makes cracking less likely and the yolks will not be grey when they are peeled, either.
