I think that it was made because somebody wanted to make a few bucks; it worked very well.

As to why it was popular - it was a LOVE story, and women control the purse strings. You MUST be a guy ;-) Women love love stories - why do you think chick flicks do so well? (And yes, I'm quite female). With all that great teaching material around, I'm always surprised that men need to ask about what women want :-)

I personally did not care for the movie. I think Trish up above hit the nail right on the head in saying the producers set out to make money and knew it would appeal to women everywhere. Also people in general are very easy to manipulate emotionally when it comes to films and movie makers know this. I am very surprised Trish was honest in recognizing that women love emotionally driven type tear Jerkers. But then again it's a very well known fact.
