Most people use VPN connections to unblock websites, is good to access blocked sites such as the BBC iPlayer outside of the UK and Hulu out of USA. Also gives anonymous browsing as well which is good when at work I guess.

Proxies. You use them to unblock things. You are basically using another IP address. I get them every day because theres a yahoo group that sends them out called every day proxies. heres some that might work, but I get them everyday because old ones might be blocked. Go to www.everydayproxy.com and sign up!

I'm sure that schools will not block web sites that they feel you should be able to access. Otherwise, if they feel you don't need it, then they will block it.

I'm sure your school has everything unblocked that you need for research. If you sincerely disagree, plead your case to the principal -- be sure to cite references and proof of your need.
