Windows XP computer won't startup. (HELP!)?
I have a HP desktop computer with XP. I was working yesterday, and a blue screen popped up and the first line said something like "Windows has detected a problem and is shutting down to prevent damage to your computer." I can't remember what all of the text in the middle of the page said, but I do remember the last line saying "Beginning physical memory dump." The computer then shut down. When I turn it back on, it displays the blue HP startup screen (like normal), then it goes to a black screen that says "Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key." That is as far as I can get it to go. (I am on my laptop now.) Anything else I press, it just thinks for a minute, then displays the message again. I can't get it to go to my desktop, or even the login screen. Any help is appreciated.
Tried unplugging everything except the monitor and power. . . that didn't work.
When I start it up, I tried to press F8 and F10, but neither did anything.
I'm saving System Restore for last, but I might have to do it.
Thanks, but I took apart the computer and pushed on the wires leading from the hard drive. This fixed it.

Mine did almost the same exact thing. And when I tired starting it back up it wouldn't do anything at all. Maybe your computer is old, like 5 years at least? Mine was that old, so it's going bad. Maybe yours is too.
What I had to do was do a recovery on my computer. Didn't really lose a whole lot of stuff. Well at least nothing important.

The error screen is known as the blue screen of death. Try booting into safe mode and diagnose the blue screen problem. More details on how to diagnose blue screen of death can be found at http://www.badxp.com/32/diagnosing-microsoft-windo...

Remove all keyboards, mice, any USB devices. If that doesn't help, it sounds like there's a problem with your hard drive.
