If registered "Unaffiliated," what does this mean?

My daughter and her husband have registered to vote as "unaffiliated." They say this gives them "carte blanch and they can vote in any primary, etc, Is this true?

We are all from North Carolina.

Yes this is correct, and a very wise move on their part.

NC voting rules are - If at the time of registering you declare a specific party you must vote for the candidates in the party for the "primary" election. However for any "general" election you are not obligated to vote within the party you declared when registering.

By changing their voting affiliation, your daughter and son-in-law are free to vote for whomever they wish in a "primary" elections.

A very smart move on their part.

I know when the primary elections were held in Michigan you could vote undeclared.......I have never heard unaffiliated.......but I know in Michigan when you voted undeclared, that was your vote.......
