When you say "I am a religious person"...what do you mean?

I ask because I always come across so many people who will claim to be religious..but ..never go to their place of worship regulary(church, mosque, temple...etc)...have indulged in pre matial sex, drink (I know some religions dont allow it), dress inappropriate (Ist being modest in clothing mentioned? Even the bride dresses are getting bold day by day!) etc

e.g.

Does just wearing a chain with a cross around your neck make you religious?

P.S.not pointing to any one particular religion..

When you say you are religious what does it really mean?

Thanks!

It means I try to live by the guidelines in the Torah and Jewish law. It means even if someone stripped off all my clothes and left me bleeding in the dirt, I would still pray to God and follow the Jewish law. You could take away my books so I could not learn and I would still try to live by what I have learned already.

I wear a yarmulke and tzit tzit but those things do not make me religious. They are simply external representations of my religion.

My beliefs and actions make me religious. The way I feel about God makes me religious. The way I treat other people according to what the Torah teaches makes me religious.

It means I thank God for the wonders I have and pray to him that things may get better when they are going poorly but it also means I believe Gods judgment is always fair and therefore I am consider myself religious.

Nothing you wear along makes you religious. I could wear a cross too and it would not make me a Christian or a Christian could wear a yarmulke (actually Cardinals do) and that does not make them Jewish.

I follow the Tao, therefor I am a Taoist.

Everything you mentioned isn't really against my religious beliefs. I don't have a place of worship, because there is nothing to worship. I don't care if others partake of pre-marital sex, as long as they are loyal to the ones they are with. Drinking is fine with me, drunken rudeness and violent behavior is not. Dress is also an issue I could really care less about.

You don't become a religious person by what you wear around your neck. It comes from within and how you love God, neighbor and self. It comes from daily prayer, attending Mass or Church and living a life of helping others when ever and how ever you can. It comes from obeying the Commandments and by being a moral person.

I'm with gu$n on this. I'm spiritual, but not religious. "Religious" equates in my mind with ritual--go to church, bible study (if you're christian), celebrate the religious holidays, etc.

Spirituality is the stripped down version, the essence of what religion should be after. Direct communion with the divine.

I mean I follow my religion to the best of my ability.

(I go to services regularly, I didn't have premarital sex, I drink wine on the Sabbath, I treat my wife and child well, I don't gossip, I give charity to the poor, I study.)

I'd like to add that rituals and tradition are something I feel I need to be in touch with my Creator. People who don't need them, I truly admire.

Wearing a cross around your neck means you worship God and I think that's very religious! Ozzy Osbourne wears a cross around his neck and that means he workshops God and is 100% Christian!

I can`t lay claim to that title. I`m a non believer in organized religions. There are so many religions which claim to be the one way to GOD, so who do you believe? I`ll speak to my own version of GOD.

going through the motions will not get you anywhere. developing a personal relationship with Christ will.

people can do/say/think what they want, but God knows us (ALL things out in the open, and ALL things we try to/and do keep secret) and will judge us each accordingly.

    there is no faking this.

You submit yourself to god. People who claim to be religous but still indulge in sin are lying.
