I think we tend to do this when the focus is more of an entertainment one than anything else. When a person such as a firefighter, for example, saves a family from a burning building, we praise them. They are still hero's. There seems to be very little room left for the anti-hero in today's sterile politically correct Western melting-pot.

Your generalization is erroneous. Western culture still admires it's heroes and heroines.
