Looking for sci-fi/adult anime suggestions -- like Ghost In the Shell?

Been looking for anime since i saw Ghost in the Shell (wow!) a year ago, but all i can find is anime about high school, anime where teenagers are the main characters, or stuff where samuri jump around from tree to tree with no laws of physics applied to slash monsters with swords. I'm too old for that suff. I realise most anime is probably like that, but I know there is more stuff out there like Ghost in the Shell and adults who won't reject a good movie just because it is animated, and i like the anime style. I'm looking for anime where the main characters are adults and the story has some more depth to it. Sci-fi, vampire, and horror preferred, but other generes ok too. I remember liking Akira but that was a long time ago, and that was about a child.

    Here are some suggestions -

    Cowboy Bebop -

    A classic Sci-Fi anime.

    Watch it here -

    Mushishi -

Mushishi is a very surreal supernatural fantasy/drama horror anime. The animation are the best I've seen in anime. Absolutely gorgeous visuals! Each episode tells a different story, there isn't any action, but each one is so compelling. It really makes you think. Quite different from most anime

When you watch it, you can really feel yourself slipping into another world! ^^ It's my favorite anime.

    There are 26 episodes

    Monster -

One of my top favorites, great mystery/horror drama.

    74 episodes, no fillers

    Kino's Journey -

Kino's Journey is a very unique slice of life series. There are only 13 episodes, and I haven't finished it yet. It is definitely one of the more interesting anime I have come across. You'll find a lot of interesting talk about different societies and ways of life. Even I don't understand all the concepts found in each country Kino visits along his journey, what I have seen so far is worth checking out

Samurai X: Tsuiokuhen (Trust and Betrayal) -

One of the best of all time, prequel to Rurouni Kenshin.

It is best seen after the series, but still

a MUST watch, if you are a fan of anime.

try appleseed or maybe psycho pass, ultimately there are no anime out there like ghost in the shell, its a one of a kind, there is the new ghost in the shell TV series ARISE and also the movies. some of the anime these people recommend is good but most of these answers are recommending anime that is NOTHING like GITS, ive asked this question before myself and only got garbage answers from people who clearly dont understand what LIKE GITS means, they are recommending vampire stuff for gods sake. the cowboy bebop movie is good but ultimately it is nothing like GITS at all. i would try looking up cyberpunk genres, or even the animated batman movies are pretty good. i have bin looking for anime like GITS for about 10 years now and if i havent found any then there is none, unless theres some stuff that has not bin translated into english. your basically looking for the CYBERPUNK genre, try and find cyberpunk movies and animations, because there is no anime like GITS and the recommendations for anime like GITS are way off, like one guy recommended millenium actress whitch is a master piece of anime but IS NOTHING LIKE GITS AT ALL. seems like people dont understand the question so they just list there own personal favs instead.

As Jeremy C said, you should watch Cowboy Bebop. You're likely to have a lot of fun with it, especially since it's episodic like GITS. I don't know if you'd enjoy Mushishi though, if you looking for a bit of action with your anime. Mushishi is spectacular to watch though, and the episodes aren't bad.

this is kind of si-fi but its also kind of one of those animes that you see robots battling each other with their pilots.

    full metal panic

    full metal panic second raid

gundam 00 (new currently at 24 episodes. will go to 50 after short break at 25)

While it might sound/seem silly, Fullmetal Alchemist is rather deep. I started watching it and SAC at the same time and in many ways I saw them as the same.

Look for anything by Satoshi Kon. He did one series, "Paranoia Agent," and several movies that are just amazing. "Millennium Actress" is one of my all-time favorite movies, not just favorite anime.
