Internet disconnects frequently?

First - this is not a hardware problem. I have tried many different routers, NICs, cables, etc, even ISP's. All drivers are up to date. This is an internal problem.

My wireless connection will have 4-5 bars (excellent connection), but then it will drop, bringing it down to 1 bar or no connectivity. This only happens for like 2 seconds, then the internet is fine again. This exact thing happens when it is directly plugged to the router, except it obviously isn't wireless, but still loses the connection, for a second.

This isn't a big deal while browsing the web, but during gaming, I get a good 3-10 seconds of lag, every minute or less.

This has to be a software problem. I've tried all kinds of stuff, and my laptop works fine with the connection.

I'm running WinXP Pro.

Please help! Any and all suggestions please! I've been messing with this for so long, and I just don't want to lag anymore!

Have you contacted the ISP as in 1999 I had the same problem with Dial up I was always redialing to connect to the internet I found out TELSTRA sent a pulse back up the line every twenty minutes and that was enough to knock me off the internet, this was done on purpose to cost me extra money for connection.

when Telstra were doing their dirty work for the government later they were used to spy on Australians while the war in Iraq was in progress.

Is there any silly setting on the router which disconnects the connection after a certain amount of time? Can you borrow another router from a friend to try to narrow down the problem?

You could try investigating MTU. Sometimes it is responsible for short disconnects.

    Here is a starter:
