If I conceived 15 days ago, why do the baby calculators say I am 4 weeks pregnant?

The start date of my last period was February 24th. Then It says I conceived some time around March 9th... which was 15 days ago... (I took a hpt... okay, I took sex of them, whatever). But the calculators all say that I am 4 weeks pregnant. The egg had only been fertilized for two weeks, so why?

What does the "Oh, I'm 23 weeks pregnant," really mean? Does that mean it's been 23 weeks since your last period? Does it mean that you are 23 weeks into the development of your period? I would feel silly telling people that I am 4 weeks pregnant, when really, I am 15 days pregnant. I don't want to lie! Naturally, I won't tell anyone (except my husband and my mother) until I am MUCH further along (in case I miscarry or something), but I don't want to be a liar of two weeks.

I'm not sure why this is bothering me so much, but it really is. Lord, I hope I'm not getting hormonal this early.... nah, I just think I'm in a bit of shock. Anyway, can you help? Which is it?

Update:

Oh, geez. Now I'm embarrassed. When I said I took "sex" pregnancy tests, I obviously meant to say six, not sex. Oh, sheesh. Now my cheeks are red. And I can't edit the typo.

Update 2:

Alyssa'a Mommy just summed up what is really bothering me about the whole thing... I mean, if I count from my LMP, then I was two weeks pregnant before I even had sex! That bother's me because it feels like I was guilty before I committed the crime (obviously it was between me and my hubby, so the crime thing is just a metaphor, but you know what I mean). It's like saying I was pregnant long before I was. I mean, I knew the second that egg was implanted. I had a moment of, "Oh God, I'm pregnant." I knew two weeks ago... I just had to wait until I could take a test to prove it to my husband.

First, take a deep breath. Second, all OB/GYN's, doctors, nurses, pregnant moms all use the method of counting weeks starting from the date of your last period. I'm 36 weeks pregnant today. I got pregnant technically 34 weeks ago and would tell people who don't get the "counting weeks method" that I'm 8 months pregnant. So, yes, you are 4 weeks pregnant. You are not lying - it's just the way pregnancy is counted. And I knew you meant 6 pregnancy tests. Third, CONGRATS!!!

  • Doctors calculate your pregnancy time by looking at your last menstrual period. So, you conceived two weeks ago, but you are considered pregnant as of your last period. It's a doctor thing, and we just all go along with it. It's not a lie to say "four weeks pregnant", it's generally accepted that that's how pregnant you are. The pregnancy will be 40 weeks, except technically, you'll know that it's only 38. It doesn't really matter in the end, and once you get used to it, you probably won't think about it anymore. So, you are four weeks pregnant. Congratulations!

The baby calculators go off the first day of your last period. If you know the day of your last period, then that is considered day one and thats where you get a total for '40 weeks' in a pregnancy. It confused the crap out of me, too, and it still confuses me a bit...but when they do sonograms they'll be able to tell baby's gestational age and be able to make a more accurate guess of when you're due. But, that due date is just an estimate and not a sure thing...I'm supposedly due this Thursday, but haven't had anything happen yet (no dilating or effacing)...I'm pregnant with my first, and I've been told 1st babies are always late...so we will see!! Congrats and best wishes!!

Source(s): I don't think I'll have my baby til the end of the first week of April. That will be 9 months from the time I concieved. To my knowledge, I concieved somewhere in the four days before I was suppose to start my period, so according to my doctors, I was 3 weeks pregnant before I even concieved (crazy, I know!) It is annoying that they can't just go off the day you believe you concieved, they have to include your last period, but that's how it's been done for awhile now...so best just to go with it!! :D

You are 4 weeks pregnant. Most count from their last menstrual period. You're due date would be 40 weeks from your LMP as well.

Your embryonic/fetal age is 2 weeks but most people talk about length of a pregnancy in terms from LMP. You are 4 weeks prego...congrats!

I am 17 weeks prego... that means that I conceived 15 weeks ago... make sense? I know its weird but dr.s do that because most women know exactly when their last period was and don't have an exact date of when they conceived so this gives dr.s a better guess at your due date.

    congrats and good luck!

just FYI: Most people share with friends and family (except hubby of course) around 10-12 weeks along.

They always tell you how far along you are based on your first day of your last period. Mostly b/c most people don't know the exact day that you conceived. It's just easier to calculate everything from your last cycle. So you aren't lying to people when you say you are 4 weeks pregnant.

I thought it was great, b/c I was like, yes - I am further along then I thought! It made me happy, the closer I get to that 12 week mark, the happier I am!

Wait til your first ultrasound and they'll confirm how far along you are..mine was only two days off from what I actually was. Good Luck and Congrats!!!

Due dates are done from your the first day of your last period. Since most women ovulate 2 weeks after they start there peroid this is when conception occurs. So, you are 4 weeks, but the baby is really only 2 weeks old..... I know it seems weird but this is how they decided to do it. Since women don't know when they ovulate but most do know the start of their last peroid then this makes it easier to calculate. So... You are 4 weeks pregnant, not 2, and your not lying by saying this.

This is why they tell you the baby can come either two wks eariler or two weeks later than the due date buty since you know the exact time you got pregnant than you should know when the baby is really due. You are not lying if you say 4 weeks tho. Its what the doctor told you so thats the date you go by!

You count from the date of your last period. Thats why they say you are 4 weeks pregnant. There really no way to tell the exact day you concieve because sperm can live in your body for up to 4 days. So yes you are 4 weeks pregnant. CONGRATS!!

You start counting from your period. You were two weeks pregnant before you even had sex. So by the time you miss your period, you are 4 weeks along. So yes, your due date is 38 weeks after you have sex.
