Are you required to have a server to host a website?

Short answer no. But at a later date if you wish to incorporate php/ajax or any dynamic programming capablities then you will need a server. For html the browser interprets the language so no server is required.

Well if you have resources to host your own site then go. You need apache server installed and a mysql if you're running a php based site and a win iss and sql for asp based site. And of course a static ip add and a connection of 500kbps or higher. Not to forget port forwarding on port 80. Man thats a lot work why not purchase a hosting package and save you the burden of setting up the server yourelf

A domain is useless unless it has a server to send information from it. Yes you would have to get hosting as well. Or you can host it on your own computer but that's more complicated.

cajunspike is right on the money. I like Uniform Server (I carry an installation on a flash drive), but XAMPP will work also. On some routers, you MUST give the computer an IP address that's completely outside the DHCP range - well-designed routers won't forward ports to an address that *can be* leased, even if it isn't. (They won't complain, they just won't forward the port.) Also, if your modem does address translation, you'll have to emasculate your router (turn it into a switch) and forward the port in your modem - forwarding through two address translations seldom works. (You disable the DHCP server in the router and connect the modem to one of the *LAN* ports of the router.)

You need to buy web hosting. Signing up for the registration just gives you the name. (You could always host the site on your own computer, and have them point the record for that name to your computer, but you'd need a static IP address.)
