How long did we keep troops in Japan and Germany after WWII?

I'm trying to put perspective around 5 years in Iraq compared to historical wars we fought. I heard we had ground forces in place long after World War I and II.

I was with the 9th Marines, 3rd Marine division when in 1957 the Japanese asked the US government to remove all ground troop s from Japan, because we represented the occupation of Japan. Within weeks, all of the Marine infantry battalions were aboard ships and on their way to Okinawa.

The US still has navy and air force operations in Japan, but the 'occupation troops' are long gone from there.

They're still there. But the situations in Japan and Germany really can't be compared to the situation in Iraq. Those were real enemies with real weapons who waged war against us first.

And our presence there has been well organized and we really worked together to rebuild those parts of the world. Very different from Iraq.

They're still there. We've also had troops in the Philippines, Cuba, and Puerto Rico since the end of the Spanish - American War in 1898. Don't forget about Korea, too; 55 years.

inspite of the actual incontrovertible reality that the Axis powers in WWII were composed of Germany, Italy, and Japan, Germany replaced into allied with the U.S. on the onset of Germany's agressive militia campaigns hostile to Eurpoean contries like France and Poland. in course of the acceptable of the warfare, Hitler wanting to diminish its alliance with the U.S., and commenced open conflict hostile to the U.S. (Russia, the former soviet union). This replaced into considered the jap the front. As a area be conscious, Hitler and his Nazi would were extra powerful in the warfare had they no longer attacked the U.S.. Having an best buddy, Germany did no longer might want to be worried about the safe practices of their jap borders, as Germany bordered the U.S.. Technically, Germany's closest best buddy in Europe replaced into Italy. on the Asian the front, Germany collaborated with Japan hostile to the united kingdom and u . s . a . of america. at the same time as the help between Germany and Italy replaced into more beneficial than Germany's help of Japan's campaign hostile to China and the U.S., they exhanged intelligence and added supported one yet another politically. So the Axis powers were Germany, Italy, Japan, and for the more beneficial portion of the warfare, the U.S.. at the same time as Germany attacked the U.S., the U.S., and the dictator of the U.S., Joesph Stalin formally alligned with u . s . a . of america and Britain. So on the acceptable of the warfare, the U.S. replaced into allied with the U. S. and uk.
