Pontiac Grand Am, 2002?

Had diagnostice run on my 2002 Pontiac Grand am. they said I need:

Plugs, coil, module............system lean..lean bank 1 sensor 2.

What does this mean, and could the average person (mechanically inclined, of course) repair or replace these things, and if so, PLEASE, tell me how. I have little money but have a friend who will help if I get details. Thanks so much

Update:

The place that run diagnostice said there were two engines made for that year Grand am, and mine is the Ecotec, is this true and how do i know which one I have?

This means that you need a EGR valve replaced on your engine, then another diagnostic test run again. Just to see if you need a new oxygen sensor also! Good Luck this will probably fix all the problems the test said was wrong!

I think they said it needs spark plugs just bec the car is 6 yrs old now, plus they mentioned the coil bec it could be the cause of the fault.

I totally agree you should get it scanned again and say nothing about the car being tested already , plus be sure to write down these codes. On most cars if you get a service manual you can learn how to get the codes and read what they are yourself by the way.

If you do have someone to do this work then it might pay to try and find a do it yourself auto wreckers that allows you to carry out all you can for one flat low price.Theres usually older models or other cars that have the exactly same parts if you ask the wreckers they should be able to tell you or buy a Haynes service manual.

Check around at the exhaust suppliers bec some have access to brand new surplus EGR valves and you can buy not bad after market o2 sensors pretty cheap too.If you find it's the EGR valve faulty , by the way if it is faulty the code should be stating an EGR valve fault exists , otherwise it's probably not the EGR valve at all.To me from what you've said it sounds like your best bet is to give the cars sparkplugs, sparkplug wires a good overhaul, plus over haul the coils contacts and try changing the o2 sensor.Note that sometimes you can clean EGR valves and that fixes the problem for some time but it all depends on how many miles you drive a yr too.

I really recommend that these things be done try cleaning the battery , starter , alternator posts and connectors , plus the engine block ground and any plug in connectors , plus all grounds you see, don't forget to clean the connections on the ignition coil etc too. Clean the sensor connections, plus either change or clean the spark plug wire connectors inside and clean and re-gap or replace the spark plugs.I recommend bec of it's age it's a good idea to simply change the plugs and test the wires by using a ohms meter and comparing them to a new set of wires.

The few things you need besides the basic tools are assorted wire brushes , fine sandpaper, spark gap tester and a few flat headed screwdrivers to make the contacts shiny.

Hope that helps and best of luck by the way it might be a good idea to change the gas filter and air filter too, plus have them check all the fluid levels and test the coolant with a antifreeze tester.

If you pick up the coil used it not be more then about 20.00 to 40.00 , sparkplugs 25.00 , wires if needed new 70.00 but if you look at the wreckers you might find a good set there too for maybe 25.00 or so, gas filter 10.00 to 25.00 and EGR valve used about 40.00 to 60.00 but a new one can run you up to 450.00 or more.

Hope that helps and best of luck.

I have a 02 grand am and never was told about the engine makes. Don't sweat urself. These cars has a lot of electrical issue. Most of it is bad wires. Go to a local mechanic(u trust) n have them make sure the car is in good shape to be on the road.

The sensor is your oxygen sensor(o2). plugs, coil, and module shouldnt be bad tp change im not sure of the o2 sensor depends where its located sensor 2 should be a downstream sensor
