Are the things that are valuable, valuable because we value them or do we value them because they are valuable?

We give them value, if we did not value them, they would have little value.

Ir depends on what the thing is. I think one has to look at a question like this on a case by case basis. For instance, my old family photos are of immense value to me, for sentimental reasons, yet, from a purely monetary standpoint, they have no value. In the case of my Rolex, for example, I value it because it is valuable in a monetary sense.

Things are valuable because we value them.

Aristotle and other classic philosophers have explored this in depth but it is likely a bit of both.

There are of course many ugly things such as anorexic models or rap music that can become fashionable. You might ask the question "does our belief that such things are nice make them beautiful?"

    -----------------

I answered a question similar to this before.

I spoke of the example of flowers. The shape of flowers are beautiful to bees and humans because they stand out and have complex shapes that stimulate our minds.

Our minds are perhaps stimulated by such shapes because off inbuilt rules of logic that are fairly universal.

Such universality may be considered an inherent beauty, but as you alluded if there were no one to appreciate beauty, can something really still be beautiful?
